With another blown coverage on a\nlong pass play, the Los Angeles Rams surrendered their 2019-20 season\nin a 34-31 loss to the San Francisco 49ers Sunday. It was a dumb\nplay. It was an ugly play. And it was entirely preventable. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And it sums up pretty much every\nsingle problem with this year\u2019s Rams team. With no first round pick\nfor the next two seasons and no real salary cap room to pursue\nmarquee free agents, this is it. This is the Rams team we\u2019re\ngetting for the next two years at least. So what can they do?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

THE OFFENSE<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Sean McVay had to figure a lot out\non the fly this season after the rest of the league caught up to what\nhe was doing with the Rams offense and their 11 personnel (3 WRs, 1\nTE, 1 RB). Everything was a struggle as the team\u2019s offensive line\nmelted down, Todd Gurley was slowed and Jared Goff couldn\u2019t find\nconsistency from one pass to another. McVay was able to cobble a\nscheme together that worked enough to keep the Rams in it, in spite\nof a carousel offensive line and got enough out of Goff to keep the\nRams alive into December, but that\u2019s all he did. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s time to make some fundamental\nchanges, especially at your QB coach position. Goff unquestionably\nregressed this season after losing Zac Taylor to the Cincinnati\nBengals and there\u2019s no reason to keep the current guy, Shane\nWaldron, in his position when as quarterbacks coach and passing game\ncoordinator, he obviously did a sub-par job. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

McVay needs to go back to the\ndrawing board on plenty of his gameplans and playcalls and, frankly,\nhe needs to add a fullback to the roster. Once the team got out of 11\npersonnel this season, they consistently moved the ball better and\nturned tight end Tyler Higbee into a budding superstar. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What they couldn\u2019t do is move the\nball consistently on the ground when just a few yards were needed.\nMcVay needs to steal some plays from his friend Kyle Shanahan and put\nan FB into the offensive mix.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

THE DEFENSE<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

I wrote last week that it was time\nto get rid of the old guys in the NFL\u2019s front offices. It might be\ntime to send some coaches out on the nearest ice flow as well. As\nmuch as it pains me to write it, Wade\nPhillips might be one of those guys<\/a>. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the last two seasons, the Rams\ndefense has been one of stellar performances paired with massive\nbreakdowns that have cost them games. This year, those breakdowns\ncame more frequently, especially in guarding the deep pass at key\nmoments at the end of games. It happened so many times, you could\nalmost predict the 49ers would pull one off Sunday and they did,\nsetting up their game-winning field goal. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Rams had far too much talent\nacross the defense to put forth some of the pathetic performances\nthey did this season against the Dallas Cowboys, Baltimore Ravens and\nin the first 49ers game. The defensive scheme used against the Tampa\nBay Buccaneers should have gotten somebody fired after the final\nwhistle. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last season, the Rams lost home\nfield advantage in the playoffs with a blown coverage against Michael\nThomas in their regular season game against the New Orleans Saints.\nThis year blown coverages cost them multiple games, all in the fourth\nquarter, regardless of who was playing safety and corner, including\nthe completion that ended any hopes of the playoffs. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A lot of the blame last season and\nearly this year was placed on departed CB Marcus Peters, but with the\nRavens he\u2019s been a different player. An elite player. He\u2019s\ngetting better coaching and it\u2019s obvious. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s time for Phillips to go.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
