Interior\noffensive lineman are often overlooked and underrated, but if you\nwant to win a championship, or keep Aaron Donald from putting a baby\ninto your quarterback that will be born hungry and mad in nine\nmonths, you need to make sure you have a serviceable unit up front. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As\ncoveted as edge rushers and edge blockers are, nothing disrupts an\noffense more than surrendering pressure on the inside. I\u2019ve\ncompiled a list of the six best available guards and centers primed\nto hit the market and your line-poor team should look at signing five\nof them. Ignore that sixth guy. Really. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We\u2019ll\nget to that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. JOE THUNEY, GUARD, UNRESTRICTED FREE AGENT<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

6-5,\n308 pounds, 27 years old, PFF Grade: 77.4<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thuney\nhas been keeping defensive linemen and linebackers out of Tom Brady\u2019s\nface for the last four seasons since the team drafted him in the\nthird round out of North Carolina State. In those four years, he\u2019s\nnever missed a start. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thuney\nhas six or more solid years ahead of him and a team should have no\nissues, with his resume and health history, of laying down the\nappropriate contract and add him to their squad for the next four\nseasons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where\nhe should end up: Los Angeles Chargers<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

If\nthe Chargers are in the market for Tom Brady, and after Monday\u2019s\nannouncement of a conscious\nuncoupling with Philip Rivers<\/a> they should be, it would\nbe smart to beef up the offensive line required to keep a 43-year-old\nquarterback upright and alive. L.A.\u2019s best guard, Michael\nSchofield, is hitting free agency this offseason and their other\nstarter, Dan Feeney, had a 51.7 grade from PFF. Bringing back\nSchofield and his 63.8 PFF grade might make sense, but only on the\nright side. The Chargers need a major upgrade on the left and Thuney\ntakes care of that for the next presidential administration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. BRANDON SCHERFF, GUARD, UNRESTRICTED FREE AGENT<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

6-5,\n315 pounds, 28 years old, PFF Grade: 75.0<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

After\nstarting all but two games his first three years in the league,\nScherff has been banged up the last two for the Washington Redskins.\nThe No. 5 overall choice in 2015, the Skins used their fifth-year\noption to keep him on the team in 2019. After getting just 11 games\nfrom him and a new regime led by Ron Rivera coming in, it\u2019s\nunlikely he\u2019ll be back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Scherff\ndid make his third Pro Bowl this last season in spite of finishing up\non injured reserve. A team signing Scherff is rolling the dice a\nlittle. He\u2019s an elite guard, one of the best in the league, but\nhave these last two years been aberrations or is he going to be one\nof those guys that stays on and off the injury list for the next few\nseasons until his career wraps up way too early?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where\nhe should end up: Cincinnati Bengals<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\nmade the argument in my 6\nbest offensive tackles list<\/a> and stand by it, if the\nBengals are going to invest in a No. 1 overall rookie quarterback,\nthey need to build a stellar offensive line around him. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\nknow Scherff is a risk, but I think he\u2019s worth it and with the\nright contract language and incentives, he (and Castanzo) would lock\ndown the left side of the line for the foreseeable future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That guy with the high PFF grade your team should avoid signing at all costs shows up in Part 2.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
