After spending the last 20 years in Boston establishing a legacy as the greatest quarterback to ever play the game, six-time Super Bowl champion Tom Brady has left New England to have some fun in the sun in Tampa Bay. The move has made the Buccaneers an immediate contender, moving Tampa Bay’s odds to win the Super Bowl from 66-1 to 18-1, while New England’s odds have moved in the opposite direction. Oddsmakers have moved the Patriots’ odds to win the Super Bowl from 10-1 to 25-1 with the news.

TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS FUTURES ODDS

ODDS TO WIN THE NFC SOUTH +200
ODDS TO WIN THE NFC +850
ODDS TO WIN THE SUPER BOWL +1800

We’ve never seen a team’s Super Bowl odds drop like this due to the signing of one player, but that’s the impact that Tom Brady has already had with Tampa Bay. The Buccaneers are now seen as contenders in the NFC, and Brady finally has the kind of weapons he has largely lacked during his time in New England.

Tampa Bay has two of the best receivers in the NFL in Mike Evans and Chris Godwin. Evans is an undisputed top five talent in the league, averaging 1,210 receiving yards and eight touchdowns per season since entering the league, and he has made the Pro Bowl in three of the last four seasons. He was one of the NFL’s top receivers in 2018, catching 86 passes for 1,524 yards and eight touchdowns, but injuries kept him out of three games and led to diminished numbers in 2019.

Godwin emerged as a fantastic complement to Evans, hauling in 86 passes for 1,333 yards with nine touchdowns to earn his first Pro Bowl nod in his third year. He thrived in single coverage opposite the Buccaneers’ No. 1 receiver, and both players give Brady better options than what he had with the Patriots. Additionally, Cameron Brate and O.J. Howard are a solid pair of tight ends, giving the GOAT even more talent in the passing game.

The defense is set to be much better in 2020 too. Devin White had an excellent rookie season in 2019, and Shaquil Barrett will return after leading the NFL with 19.5 sacks last year. The front four is solid, making Tampa Bay one of the best run defenses in the league, but to say the secondary is iffy is a bit of an understatement. That is the area the Bucs need to improve the most heading into 2020.

Bruce Arians is hoping that Brady still has something left in the tank. He will be 43 years old at the start of the 2020 season, and he is coming off one of his worst seasons. According to ESPN, his off-target rate was the highest of his career, and it was the third-highest rate in the NFL last season. Additionally, he really struggled under pressure, posting a 42.5 passer rating when being blitzed. That makes this signing far from a slam dunk on the field, but it is certainly a coup off the field for what Brady will mean to the franchise.

While Tampa Bay might not win the Super Bowl with Tom Brady, the Buccaneers will certainly contend for the NFC South. With Carolina tanking, Atlanta cutting salary, and New Orleans bringing back a quarterback nearly as old as TB12, the Buccaneers are a solid bet at +200 to win the NFC South.

NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS FUTURES ODDS

ODDS TO WIN THE AFC EAST -110
ODDS TO WIN THE AFC +1000
ODDS TO WIN THE SUPER BOWL +2500

It’s all on Bill Belichick now. The greatest coach in the modern era will be fully under the spotlight without Brady, and he has some major decisions to make. First and foremost, New England must settle on a quarterback to replace the best signal caller in NFL history. Jarrett Stidham is the favorite to win the job per the NFL futures odds after being drafted by the Patriots last season, but he didn’t look sharp in very limited action. Stidham was seen as a project pick when he was selected out of Auburn, so Belichick will likely go with a more proven option under center.

Whoever ends up winning the starting job will have some massive shoes to fill. It won’t be easy replacing Brady, and the job is even more difficult considering what the Pats have at the skill positions. Julian Edelman dropped 5.8 percent of passes thrown his way in 2019, and none of the other receivers have shown they are ready to step up. Additionally, Sony Michel failed to grow after a solid rookie campaign, regressing as a runner in his second season.

The defense will be the backbone of this team once more. New England has the best secondary in the NFL with Stephon Gilmore and Jason McCourty at cornerback and Devin McCourty and Patrick Chung at safety, and Belichick has a knack for plugging and playing guys in the front seven.

New England has won 11 straight, and 16 of the last 17, AFC East titles, and the Patriots have recorded at least 10 wins in each season since 2003. This might be Belichick’s toughest test yet, but the division remains theirs for the taking per the AFC East betting odds. Miami is still in the middle of a massive rebuild, the New York Jets are struggling to find an identity, and Buffalo is one of the most likely teams to regress.

Get the latest NFL football odds and information–follow BetOnline.ag on Twitter!

BetOnline.ag on Instagram–Follow for the latest odds, stats and information!

It’s the end of an era.
