You can be forgiven for missing the\nnews that a new NFL Collective Bargaining Agreement passed a vote by\nthe NFL Players Association and will go into effect beginning with\nthe 2020-21 season, if there is one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I don\u2019t know what you were doing\nwhen this slipped by you. Maybe stabbing someone with a whittled-down\nKFC spork as you stole their Charmin Ultra and Germ-X. Who\u2019s to\nsay?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As we have, as a society, decided to\nface the apocalypse with immaculately clean butt holes, we now find\nthe time to look back and see how this new CBA will affect the sport\nwe love and hope happens again, on time, which, you know, means the\nworld didn\u2019t end. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It would be an absolute shame to\nonly now get to see the New England Patriots dynasty collapse at the\nsame time as our civilization. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fun times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

WHAT DO PLAYERS GET?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now, not all the players were happy\nwith this deal. There were some objections by the league\u2019s biggest\nstars, like Aaron Rodgers and Todd Gurley, but they were overruled by\ndemocracy and players who don\u2019t get paid in Bugattis who wanted to\ncash in on 47 percent of the league\u2019s revenue, amounting to $70.5\nmillion distributed among all the players. It bumps up to 48 percent\nin 2021 and could be 48.8 if the league\u2019s TV revenues go up by 120\npercent. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Considering the NFL might be the\nfirst pro sport to start after Cottonelle-Ageddon, that\u2019s probably\nas safe a bet as you could make right now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The deal also keeps NFL owners from\nfudging the numbers with \u201cstadium credits,\u201d meaning new\nconstruction won\u2019t affect the total number. Also, players will get\na cut of all the new, legal gambling in stadiums and 70 percent of\nthe incremental revenue for the L.A. Stadium project. And I have no\nidea what that means. But it\u2019s cash in their pocket so they voted\nfor it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to reports, that\u2019ll all\ncome to a about a 20\npercent boost in pay<\/a> for about 60 percent of the NFL\u2019s\nplayers. By 2030, the league minimum for a player with one year\nexperience will be $1.185 million, up from $585,000 under the old\ndeal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Active gameday rosters will be\nexpanded, from 46 to 48 players (with the rule that one of those\nextra players must be an offensive lineman \u2013 frankly, most teams\nwould do this anyway). Practice squads expand from 10 players to 12\nthis season and 14 beginning in 2022. They\u2019ll also make more money,\n$11,500 a week, up from $8,000 a week. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The teams can also pull some\nshenanigans with practice squad players and add them to their active\nrosters multiple times a season, pushing their roster size to 55\nplayers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There\u2019s a new \u201cperformance\nescalator bonus\u201d that can boost pay for second rounder that plays a\ncertain number of snaps per season, something that was previously\nonly available for players selected in rounds 3-7. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fifth-year options will no longer be\nbased on the pick a player was selected, but will all be based on\nperformance and could be as high as the franchise tag for the\nposition. That fifth-year option is also full guaranteed and teams\nmust pick up the option before a player\u2019s fourth season. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The NFL will no longer suspend\nplayers for positive marijuana tests and will only call a test\n\u201cpositive\u201d if it\u2019s 150 nanograms of THC or over. Even then, a\nboard of \u201cjointly appointed medical professionals\u201d will determine\nif the player needs treatment. If a guy is busted by the cops with\npot, the NFL won\u2019t punish that either.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

PEDs and masking agents will still\nresult in suspensions to varying degrees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Roger Goodell will no longer be\ninvolved in NFL discipline. The new deal will have \u201cneutral\narbitration\u201d and it\u2019s expected that clubs and players will pay\nfar fewer fines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Players will be paid over 34 weeks,\nup from 17 weeks and that will expand to 36 weeks once the 17th<\/sup>\ngame kicks on. They\u2019ll also get a 1\/17th<\/sup> salary raise to\ntheir current contracts when\/if that extra game gets added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

OH YEAH. WHAT DO THE OWNERS GET?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

They get that 17th<\/sup> game\nthat they\u2019ve wanted so desperately. It won\u2019t start this upcoming\nseason and can only begin in 2021, but the owners can decide they\ndon\u2019t want to do that. But the idea that they won\u2019t add it is the\nfunniest joke I\u2019ve made in this article.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The owners have a window between\n2021-23 to figure it out, bye weeks, home games, etc. But trust that\nthey will.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The playoffs have been expanded by\ntwo teams, one for each conference. Only the team earning home field\nadvantage in the regular season will have a first-round AFC or NFC\nbye. We\u2019re not waiting on that. It\u2019s happening this upcoming\nseason, barring the end of the world as we know it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An extra game and an extra playoff\ngame make the league way more valuable for their new TV deals. This\nwas a huge change, one that affects the league top-down financially\nand adds a little something for the fans and bettors with two more\nplayoff games and 16 more regular season games.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And it\u2019s labor peace through 2030. Which is good for everybody, as long as no one opens that seventh seal or shows up riding a pale horse in the next few months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
