This Wrestlemania will see the newest iteration of the World Heavyweight
Championship up for grabs for the first time in its young history. Established in April of
2023, Seth Rollins battled through a tournament to crown the inaugural winner in May of
last year. The culmination of the tournament took place at Night of Champions where
Rollins picked up a victory in the finals against AJ Styles and picked up the new World
Heavyweight Championship. Drew McIntyre on the other hand wasn’t a part of this
tournament. He’s felt stifled at every turn, and even though he’s had opportunities, it
won’t be enough until he has his name etched in WWE World Heavyweight
Championship history.
It’s McIntyre’s Moment
Drew McIntyre is no slouch and is a two-time WWE Champion with his first reign
coming in 2020. He won the Royal Rumble and proceeded to challenge Brock Lesnar
for the title at Wrestlemania 36. Unfortunately this was the first Wrestlemania during the
pandemic, which was contested in front of zero fans at the WWE Performance Center.
A moment that McIntyre had dreamt of his entire career, winning the WWE
Championship, was marred as his Wrestlemania moment took place in what was
basically an empty warehouse.
His second reign was during the “Thunderdome” era and wasn’t much more satisfying
than the first.
Now and only now is he finally getting an opportunity to have his Wrestlemania moment
in front of a full house in Philadelphia with his eyes focused entirely on the WWE World
Heavyweight Championship. He’s developed a new attitude that swings towards the
heel side as he reeks of desperation for the World Championship. He’s faced Rollins
twice for the title in the last year but was unsuccessful in both attempts. His
performance in this year’s edition of the Royal Rumble saw him eliminated by CM Punk
and his chances at winning a top title in front of an audience were slipping away.
Punk was rumoured to be on course for a collision with Rollins at Wrestlemania but an
injury during the Royal Rumble has him out for a number of months. Oh and that injury,
well it came at the hands of a futureshock DDT courtesy of none other than Drew
McIntyre.
This opened the window for McIntyre to climb the mountain once again.
At Elimination Chamber, he ran the table to become the new number one contender for
Rollins’ title at Wrestlemania 40. With his new attitude, we’ve seen Drew cutting
slanderous promos on Punk and Rollins, both on Raw and on social media. His
confidence is at an all-time high and he’s more than deserving of his Wrestlemania
moment in front of tens of thousands.
Blinded by the Light
Rollins has been nothing but a fighting champion during his reign, the workhorse
champion if you will. He’s wrestled through multiple injuries and missed a number of
weeks with a knee injury that was sustained in mid-january.
But that’s all a thing of the past. Cleared at the beginning of March, Rollins is back to his
old ways. His old ways being that he’s scheduled to wrestle on both nights of
Wrestlemania. The former Messiah has found himself in the middle of the Cody Rhodes
and Bloodline storyline, a distraction from the immediate threat that is Drew McIntyre. Is
Seth Rollins being drawn too close to the limelight and isn’t able to see the predator
among the prey?
The pick: Drew McIntyre -800
With his contract rumoured to be ending soon, a World Heavyweight Championship run
may keep him around a little longer. He’s deserving of a Wrestlemania moment in Philly
with a character that is more must watch than almost anything he’s done on record. It
also doesn’t have an immediate shelflife. You can go with the angle where he will do
anything to keep the gold he was all so desperate to hold and continue it until CM Punk
is eventually cleared. Then we can talk about Pepsi Phil going head-to-head with the
Scottish Warrior, but for now, Seth “Freakin” Rollins will have to do.
