Max Scherzer did the same in the National League for the Washington Nationals. What do they have in common? They are both former Detroit Tigers. And Justin Verlander was the runner-up to Porcello in the AL. And he’s on the trading block.

The Tigers once enjoyed the best starting pitching in baseball, but they are slowly trading off the pieces. Budget constraints are crippling the Tigers and turning this team into a middle of the pack squad. By the beginning of spring training Miguel Cabrera, who won a Silver Slugger Award for the Tigers, could be playing elsewhere.

The Tigers were one of the best teams in baseball for years. The biggest regret in Motown is they did not take advantage and win a World Series. The bullpen was usually the culprit. You can throw in former slugger Prince Fielder disappearing in the post-season before being traded to Texas.

The Tigers had a rotation of Scherzer, Porcello, Verlander and David Price. They are all Cy Young contenders, but the ball club could never win the big prize. This was the best seven-inning team in baseball. Unfortunately for the Tigers, it remains a nine-inning game.

Meanwhile, the AL voting drew criticism from supermodel and fiancé Kate Upton who ranted on Twitter “He had the majority of 1st place votes, and two writers didn’t have him on their ballots?!! Can you pick more out of touch people to vote? @MLB.”

Verlander received 14 first place votes to Porcello’s eight. But Porcello got 137 points to 132 for Verlander because two writers did not place Verlander on their ballot. Each writer votes for five players.
