Toronto Raptors & Chicago Bulls Brawl Prop Odds

Posted by BetOnline Team on 3/22/2017 10:59:41 AM

Serious NBA fights are few and far between and Tuesday’s altercation between Chicago Bulls center Robin Lopez and Toronto Raptors forward Serge Ibaka was no exception.  Anyone following along on Twitter and not watching the game was disappointed when they saw the video as the reaction on social media suggested something of the level of the 1984 NHL ‘Good Friday Brawl’ between the Montreal Canadiens and Quebec Nordiques.  Not even close.

In actuality, the fracas between the two players was slightly beyond the pale of most NBA fights.  Both suggested that the other guy started it in an overreaction to overly physical play under the basket.  It’s hard to say who started it—both Ibaka and Lopez were anxious to get at one another.  When they did it was the usual slapping and flailing with a non-committed punch or two thrown in for good measure.  The benches emptied with most of the other coaches and players appearing to try to separate Lopez and Ibaka as the two primary combatants kept trying to pull away from the ‘peacekeepers’ and rejoin the fisticuffs.  A few of the players and team personnel acting like they were going to get involved but that never transpired.

SUSPENSIONS ARE NO LONGER AUTOMATIC FOR FIGHTING IN THE NBA

After the game Lopez and Ibaka make comments to the effect that a suspension would be forthcoming from the NBA ‘powers that be’.  A review of the NBA’s discipline blotter strongly suggests otherwise.  In the 2016-2017 season to date there have been 8 players suspended for nine separate incidents missing a total of 32 games.  The overwhelming majority were for off court infractions with 6 players missing a total of 29 games for offenses ranging from criminal violence to reporting late after the All Star Break.

By contrast, on court infractions resulted in only three suspensions for a total of three games—none for instigating a fight.  Phoenix’s Alex Len did get a one game suspension for ‘leaving the bench during an altercation’ in mid-February but the principals of the fight (Phoenix’s Marquese Chriss and Tyler Ulis, Memphis’ Troy Daniels) only received fines.  The other two offenses were a pair of automatic suspensions to New Orleans center DeMarcus Cousins for his 16th and 18th technical fouls of the season.  There was also one coach suspended with Atlanta’s Mike Budenholzer getting a one game ‘time out’ for making contact with an official.

You have to go back to December 2013 to find the last suspension handed out as punishment for involvement in a straight up fight.  Portland Trailblazers center Meyers Leonard and Philadelphia 76ers  center Daniel Orton each received a one game ban for going ‘mano a mano’ during a game.  There have been a couple of suspensions for ‘leaving the bench’ or ‘instigating an altercation’ but the message from the NBA since then has been pretty clear—as long as there’s not a sucker punch or a cheap shot involved a garden variety fight doesn’t obviate a suspension.

So with this context in mind BetOnline.ag offers an assortment of proposition bets with odds on what punishments will be forthcoming to Ibaka, Lopez and their teammates.  In addition, there are additional props on how each team will perform during the rest of the season and into the playoffs.
