San Antonio Spurs big man Tim Duncan could be riding off into the sunset

Tim Duncan, 40, Manu Ginobili, 38, and Tony Parker, 33, played an NBA record 778 regular season games together and won 575 of those games, which is also an NBA record.

Duncan spent 18 seasons with the San Antonio Spurs, won five titles, and will go down as the best power forward in NBA history. However, father time catches up to ‘;1w7all of us. That includes Duncan, who spent much of the second half on the bench as the younger and stronger Oklahoma City Thunder sent the Spurs packing with a 113-99 beating in the second round of the Western Conference Finals.

The game was never in doubt, as the Spurs fell behind by 28 points, but the future of Duncan and Ginobili is. They looked like guys ready to retire. San Antonio Coach Gregg Popovich gave no clues during his final press conference of the season.

He also did not expect Duncan or Ginobili to ask for his advice.

“I haven’t talked to Timmy in about 11 years,” Popovich joked. “And Manu stopped talking to me about three or four years ago. They’re just going to come in and say, ‘Pop this is what I’m doing.’ And whatever they say, that's what I’ll do.”

The Spurs are one of the great stories in sports. San Antonio is not one of the glamor spots in the NBA like Los Angeles, Miami or Chicago. It is a small market team stuck in the middle of Texas. This is not a destination for many free agents.

However, DeMarcus Aldridge was one of the most coveted free agents in the NBA last season. Everybody wanted him because he wanted to play for Popovich, who is considered one of the top coaches in history, and two-time defensive player of the year Kawhi Leonard.

There are also rumors that OKC forward Kevin Durant will be targeted by the Spurs when he becomes a free agent this summer. They will need to find $9.2 million in additional cap space but that might be tricky. Can the team trade Danny Green $10 million a year cap space for the next three seasons? They could also trade Boris Diaw ($6.5 million) and Patty Mills ($3.5 million).

Charlotte Hornets guard Nicolas Batum might be a target if Ginobili retires. He enjoyed a bounce back season with the Hornets. He would also be reunited with former Portland Trailblazers teammate Aldridge and French national teammates Parker and Diaw.

Durant will get offers from the Los Angeles Lakers, New York Knicks and his hometown Washington Wizards. The World Champion Golden State Warriors could also be in the mix because Durant wants to win a title. However, this will always be Stephen Curry’s team and can Durant’s ego handle that?

San Antonio fans created an online petition to erect a mural or statue of Duncan. More than 1,500 citizens signed the petition, which caused a response from Mayor Ivy Taylor.

“The San Antonio Spurs have been an amazing team since people can remember, and have been a part of our culture since forever now. I think now is a perfect time to try and keep that alive. Since Tim Duncan is currently the eldest player on the team, I think it’d be a great way to show how appreciative the city of San Antonio is with a mural and/ or statue in the heart of the city. Go Spurs Go!
