College Football Betting: Mid-American Conference Preview

Over the years I have really become a fan of the MAC and how can you not with all that MACtion on Tuesday and Wednesday nights throughout the season. Operating in the shadows of the Big Ten there is definitely not a glut of talent but if you look at NFL rosters you see a very fair representation of talent...including some big names like Ben Roethlisberger.

Lately there is no question the league has been dominated by Northern Illinois. The Huskies have been steamrolling over the competition literally, and it has been impressive as they have had multiple QBs and coaches so it is not just one signature name that has led them to success. Heading into this season they are definitely one of the favourites and as it turns out they and a handful of other teams in the MAC West are well ahead of the programs in the East.

Here is a look at the favourites:

Northern Illinois Huskies (MAC West)
Odds to win MAC: 9/1

NIU has five straight seasons with 11 or more victories and is returning QB Drew Hare. The MAC West looks to be really tight and their season will hinge on whether they can beat Toledo on the road and Western Michigan at home. Unlike in past seasons don’t expect them to upset a B10 team - they are at Ohio State.

Western Michigan Broncos (MAC West)

P.J. Fleck has WMU expecting big things this season. They are returning a boatload of starters on both sides of the ball none more important than junior QB Zach Terrell. RB Jarvion Franklin ran for more than 1500 yards as a frosh and gives them the balance they need to beat any team on their schedule, save Ohio State. They are going to be comparing themselves to NIU all season long until they finally square off.

Toledo Rockets (MAC West)

The Rockets can’t be discounted this season because they have the scheduling advantage of getting the two teams above at the Glass Bowl. They have not broken through like NIU but this team has been good and has the top running back in the league in Kareem Hunt. They have been developing a stingier defense of late. They gamble but they make big plays too.

Massachusetts Minutemen (MAC East)

Over the course of three seasons in the MAC UMass has only won five games total (not necessarily league games). This year thanks to the return of 10 starters on offense and an awful MAC East they are the favourites coming in. They also have the scheduling luxury of missing the Big Three in the MAC West drawing Ball State and Eastern Michigan. If they don’t show improvement this season they probably never will.

Projected Standings:

MAC East

1. Massachusetts

2. Bowling Green

3. Ohio

4. Kent State

5. Akron

6. Buffalo

7. Miami

MAC West

1. Northern Illinois

2. Western Michigan

3. Toledo

4. Ball State

5. Central Michigan

6. Eastern Michigan

Best Bet:

I want to say UMass here because there is a title game and it is going to be much easier to qualify for it from the East than the West. But even if they made it I don’t think they would have much of a chance. Northern Illinois is the name you know and the other programs have not done enough for me to bridge that gap. WMU could surprise but I would rather make my money off them during the season than predict their success this far out. Take Northern Illinois.
