College Football Betting: SEC Preview

Posted by The Wiesguy on 8/10/2015 11:00:39 PM

To most the SEC is considered the top football conference in America. I think that is probably true but that fact also makes it difficult to predict who is going to win (unless you just want to go with Alabama all the time). The SEC west is considered the top division in football with probably four teams capable of winning it while the East might have just a couple. Does that mean you should take a team like Georgia who might not be the best but might have the easiest path? Maybe, but things are never that simple.

Alabama Crimson Tide

Odds to win SEC: +250

Alabama has been the dominant team in the league since coach Nick Saban came to Tuscaloosa. They made it to the playoffs last season but lost a lot, especially on offense, where they replace their quarterback and top running back and receivers. Due to the fact that they have been reeling in top recruiting classes for several years there is more than enough talent on campus and this year they may return to being led by the defense, which should be nasty up front. You can’t count them out.

Georgia Bulldogs

The Bulldogs seem to be the only certainty in the SEC East heading into to the season. Yes they are breaking in a new signal caller but running back Nick Chubb proved last year that he is capable of carrying the club offensively last season. If they get effective quarterback play he should be enable the Dawgs to break Mizzou’s recent stranglehold on the division. The defense should be strong once again. Of all the team’s they probably have the easiest path to the title game.

Auburn Tigers

Expectations are very high for Auburn this season. With Jeremy Johnson at QB they can be a little more balanced and maybe, just maybe, they have another freak like Cam Newton on their hands. Also, they have brought in Will Muschamp to coach the defense. He might not have been able to get things done as the head coach at Florida but there is no doubting his ability to coach defense. If they become even average on that side of the ball they are going to be a force.

LSU Tigers

When it comes to overall talent hardly any program in the country can match LSU. The problem is they have not been able to find a quarterback who can make it all come together. This year the same crew is a little older and more experienced but only time will tell if they can make it happen on the field. Whoever winds up being QB will have the luxury of handing off to one of the best backs in the nation in Leonard Fournette and will be backed by the usually stifling LSU defense. Everything else is in place for this team to surprise.

Projected Standings

Eastern Division:

1. Georgia

2. Missouri

3. Tennessee

4. Florida

5. South Carolina

6. Kentucky

7. Vanderbilt

Western Division:

1. Alabama

2. Auburn

3. Arkansas

4. LSU

5. Ole Miss

6. Texas A&M

7. Mississippi State

Best Bet: Alabama

Best Value: LSU

There is are a lot of good values to choose from in the SEC race. I am tempted to grab Georgia but you can get even more value with LSU who has just as good as chance as any to claim the West. Whoever does win that division is likely to be the favourite in the title game. Even Arkansas and Ole Miss are worth a look.
