Plenty Of College Football Action On Tap With Bowl Season Getting Underway

Posted by on 12/14/2015 9:09:25 PM

The 2015-16 Bowl season gets underway with a full slate of games this Saturday and while the Air Force Reserve Celebration Bowl didn’t make our cut of the games you will want to watch this weekend the five games below will be nationally televised and worth checking out. Here is a look at the television schedule for this Saturday’s Bowl games.

Gildan New Mexico Bowl

(7-5) New Mexico vs. Arizona (6-6)

Saturday, 2:00 PM ET on ESPN

Bob Davie will lead New Mexico to its first Bowl game appearance since 2007 and they also have the good fortunate of playing this game in their home stadium. Arizona flirted with a .500 record all season and while neither team has been talked about very much this year this matchup should provide some entertaining football with the Lobos looking for redemption after falling just short of winning their division.

Pick: New Mexico

Royal Purple Las Vegas Bowl

(9-3) BYU vs. Utah (9-3)

Saturday, 3:30 PM ET on ABC

This game will be teased as the Holy War showdown but the football itself should be pretty good as Bronco Mendenhall coaches his last game for BYU. Both teams stole some of the national spotlight with their strong play this season and even though the Utes will be without their star running back Devontae Booker this should be an entertaining game with the Cougars laying it all on the line for Mendenhall.

Pick: BYU

Raycom Media Camellia Bowl

(10-2) Appalachian State vs. Ohio (8-4)

Saturday, 5:30 PM ET on ESPN

Even though it doesn’t look the sexiest matchup on paper this one certainly has some potential with the Bobcats on a three-game winning streak and the Mountaineers bringing the best offense from the Sun Belt to Montgomery, Alabama this weekend. This will be the first Bowl appearance for Appalachian State since its move from the FCS so they will be pumped to light up Ohio’s defense in this one.

Pick: Appalachian State

AutoNation Cure Bowl

(6-6) Georgia State vs. San Jose State (5-7)

Saturday, 7:00 PM ET on CBSSN

Georgia State did win its final four games of the season to get to 6-6 but the only reason San Jose State is even in this Bowl game is because of its high academic rate so this could be one of the least appealing matchups of the Bowl season. The Spartans have registered only two wins over teams with winning records this season so while we might expect a 5-7 team to pull off an upset somewhere along the way it likely won’t happen in this game but you can still enjoy cheering against San Jose State in this one.

Pick: Georgia State

R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl

(9-3) Arkansas State vs. Louisiana Tech (8-4)

Saturday, 9:00 PM ET on ESPN

Arkansas State had no problem ripping up the Sun Belt this season with a perfect 8-0 record in conference play but Louisiana Tech should provide them with a stiffer test in this Bowl matchup. Florida transfer Jeff Driskel should be able to figure out the Red Wolves’ defense and take full advantage of his weapons with wide receiver Trent Taylor and running back Kenneth Dixon both in line for strong performances.

Pick: Louisiana Tech
