College Football Betting: Week 5 Preview

Posted by The Wiesguy on 9/29/2015 12:10:25 AM

This is a week to try and get to know the Big 12 better. They have three games featuring ranked teams that will be on national television, including a chance to check out the West Virginia Mountaineers for the first time for many. They are playing against Oklahoma which is lying in the weeds behind the much higher ranked TCU and Baylor. Here is a look at those games and a neat one from the SEC. They are just hard to get away from.

Saturday October 3

Texas Longhorns vs. #4 TCU Horned Frogs

12:00PM

TCU -17.5

That TCU/Texas Tech game last week was one of the wildest games in recent memory. We knew coming into the season that the Horned Frogs were going to be led by their offense this season but I thought they would have some semblance of defense- they are getting killed by injuries on that side of the ball. This week they are heavy favourites at home but I think they have a good chance of covering the number because the Longhorns offense is very hard to count on. It is hard to believe that Texas would be that big a dog against anybody but that is the modern reality.

#23 West Virginia Mountaineers vs. #15 Oklahoma Sooners

12:00PM

Oklahoma -7

Both of these teams are 3-0 heading into this one. So far West Virginia has not been tested (what else is new?) but this is the first of four straight against the top four team in the B12 with three of them on the road. To be honest, I am not sure they have a chance of beating any of these teams (OU/OK State/TCU/Baylor) and Oklahoma is coming off a bye last week so preparation won’t be an issue unless they are caught looking ahead to the annual Red River Rivalry against Texas the week after. Oklahoma is a steal at -7.

Texas Tech Red Raiders vs #5 Baylor Bears

3:30PM

Baylor -14

It seems like pundits are going to be comparing Baylor and TCU until they play each other or one of them loses. This is a chance to the Bears to leapfrog the Horned Frogs and I expect them to do so thanks to being at home and an actual defensive presence against a team TCU barely beat last week. This one will probably still go over the total but Baylor won’t have to sweat it. Look for them to score more than a point a minute and cover as well.

#3 Ole Miss Rebels vs. #25 Florida Gators

7:00PM

Mississippi -7

The Rebels are currently in the pole position in the SEC West. They have already beat Alabama and after that only LSU looks all that formidable in the division and they get them at home in November. Now they just have to not get caught looking ahead. Florida is undefeated too but they have not impressed me at at all. Last week they probably should have lost at home against Tennessee but the Vols kind of gave it to them. If both teams play their best this is an an easy road win for the Rebels. Take Ole Miss.
