College Football Betting: Michigan Wolverines vs. Utah Utes Preview

Posted by The Wiesguy on 8/27/2015 11:55:34 PM

This may be the start of the Jim Harbaugh era for Michigan but Utah is a proud program that is looking is still looking to prove they belong in the PAC12. A win over a Big Ten team will put the rest of the league on notice that they are not anybody's doormat and that trips into Salt Lake City are not going to be easy this season. Michigan may be getting all the hype but we might be able to use the very public nature of this game to our advantage.

Michigan Wolverines vs. Utah Utes

Thursday September 3

Rice-Eccles Stadium - Salt Lake City, Utah

Utah -5.5, 46

Silicon Valley may be a hub of innovation but Harbaugh's success at Stanford was simple, it was built upon offensive lines that could pound you into submission and defenses that were physical to match. The assumption is that he is going to bring the same level of intensity and physicality to Ann Arbor but he won't be able to pull it all together in year one. Michigan has question marks at quarterback, among others, and it is not clear what the strength of the team will be right now. They might start demonstrating some of that classic Harbaugh kick-ass attitude but it is not going to be enough to beat good teams right away. Sorry Big Blue but he needs some time.

The Utes are coming into the season underrated in the PAC12 South. USC and UCLA are expected to be strong this season and the Arizona schools are not too shabby either but the Utah should be right there with them. Last season they won nine games thanks to a strong running game and aggressive defense. Ley by coach Kyle Whittingham, the Utes like to pressure the quarterback and force opponents into making mistakes, a strategy which should play well against Michigan. RB Devontae Booker is a punishing runner who lets Utah smother the clock once they get a lead. This team should be in every game they play this season and they are confident heading into the opener, especially after beating Michigan last year.

Prediction: Michigan is the more recognizable program but they are priced right as the underdog in this matchup. I like Utah to win by a touchdown but am going to wait on this one hoping to get a better price. Utah is still not well known in a lot of circles and I think public money coming in late on Michigan will provide even more value.

Pick: Utah -5.5
