College Football Betting: North Carolina Tar Heels vs. South Carolina Gamecocks Preview

Posted by The Wiesguy on 8/25/2015 10:31:42 PM

This game essentially kicks off the NCAA football season (sorry FIU vs UCF) and should be a pretty good contest too. Neither of these teams are expected to challenge for supremacy in their respective conferences (the ACC and SEC) but there will be talent on the field and either one could surprise. At the very least this will be a barometer for both teams as to how competitive they will actually be this year. A close game is to be expected. Just look at the number, not much difference between these clubs. The number might even come down towards kickoff.

North Carolina Tar Heels vs. South Carolina Gamecocks

Thursday September 3

Bank of America Stadium - Charlotte, NC

South Carolina -3, no total currently listed

North Carolina

Even though they are in the wide open Coastal Division in the ACC not that much is expected of the Tar Heels this season...unless they can start playing some defense. Not that long ago they used to funnel defensive players to the NFL but of late they have been a sieve, negating an offense that can put up points with any team in the league. That is primarily because of the exploits of QB Marquise Williams. A great athlete with a strong arm it sometimes looks like he is drawing plays up in the dirt but it is hard to argue with the results - he led the team in rushing and passing. He will have to have another strong season for the Tar Heels to be successful.

South Carolina

This is not going to be Steve Spurrier's best team at South Carolina. While his teams at Florida seemed to be more than the sum of their parts while he was there innovating the Fun 'N Gun offense the opposite seems to be true at South Carolina, even in recent seasons where they won double digit games they seemed to leave you wanting more. Heading into 2015 the Gamecocks are looking to establish a new quarterback. That used to be a no brainer for Spurrier but at SC not so much, they have yet to have a signal caller that knocks your socks off. If they can find the right guy there is enough surrounding talent for them to compete for the SEC East Division title. If some other program struggle.

Prediction: This is a huge game for both of these teams. It's early of course but both are looking for signals. The Gamecocks from the big bad SEC are the favourites but barely. I think the strongest known quantity is the Tar Heels offense led by Williams. Look for it to be ahead of all the other units on the field and to win the day. Take North Carolina in an upset.

Pick: North Carolina +3
