But that is not the big news here. One of the toughest and best linebackers shocked the football world when he was shown sobbing uncontrollably after making a play on Thursday Night Football against the New Orleans Saints.

It has forced people to take another look at the NFL and concussions and brain injuries.

Kuechly looked scared after suffering a concussion on a play that did not seem especially violent.

However, he has suffered concussions in the past, and he might be worried that he is now more susceptible to further brain injuries and could be close to the end of his career.

“Whatever that due process is, I know they’re going to do what’s in his best interest,” said teammate Kurt Coleman. “And ultimately that’s all I care about is Luke the person, not Luke the player. That’s really all I care about in this time because I want him to be as healthy as he can be. Not just playing for us, but later in his career.”

Kuechly told his teammates to keep fighting on the football field.

“I honestly can’t tell you more,” Rivera told reporters in Charlotte. “For me to say anything other than that would be unfair. I am not the health professional in this situation.”

The Panthers (4-6) are in a tough spot. They are last in the AFC South but are just two games behind Atlanta in a jumbled division. It is unlikely they would make the playoffs unless they win the division. Kuechly is a key component to that defense. However, the Panthers must weigh what’s good for the team with what’s good for the player.

Their playoff lives depend on an upcoming 10-day, two city trip to Oakland and Seattle. It is not known if Kuechly will play.
