Tannehill, Dolphins In Tough Versus Desperate Giants On Monday Night Football

Posted by on 12/11/2015 8:51:48 PM

The Miami Dolphins are in a tough spot at 5-7 in the AFC East where they are looking up at the New England Patriots, New York Jets and Buffalo Bills in a relatively strong division. Meanwhile, their next opponent the New York Giants head in to this week with an identical 5-7 record only in the NFC East that is good enough to be tied for top spot in the division. The Dolphins enter this week looking to build towards the future with an eye on making progress towards becoming the team they need to be in order to become a contender in the near future while the Giants on the other hand are playing with a sense of desperation as they try to figure out how to get in to the postseason. Miami is in a tough spot but will lay it all on the line again with a chance to upset New York under the bright lights of Monday Night Football.

NFL Betting Line: New York -1

What The Giants Will Have To Do To Win

The Giants have blown leads in the final minute of a game four times this season, which is tied for the most ever in the NFL since the merger. New York’s inability to close out games has kept it from running away with a division title and the schedule only gets tougher for them from here with the Carolina Panthers, Minnesota Vikings and Philadelphia Eagles on the slate to close out the season following this week’s date with the Dolphins. That makes this Monday Night Football showdown that much more important and means the Giants will need to play with a strong sense of urgency and find a way to finish strong to avoid blowing another fourth-quarter lead. Eli Manning has completed under 55-percent of his passes in three straight weeks and will need to be better, which should start with the game plan and getting Odell Beckham Jr. the football more often. Meanwhile, the New York defense will have to find a way to generate more pressure up front and try to rattle Ryan Tannehill in the pocket and force him in to making mistakes.

What The Dolphins Will Have To Do To Win

Miami will have to do a better job protecting Tannehill for a full four quarters and we saw that from them in last week’s 15-13 win over the Baltimore Ravens in which they continued to hand the football to Lamar Miller and let him to do some damage. Miller rushed for113 yards on 20 carries and the Dolphins will have no problem continuing to feed him the rock for as long as he continues to average more than five yards per carry. Miami’s offense will eventually try to take some shots over the top and that will require the offensive line stepping up and making sure they keep Jason Pierre-Paul and company at bay. Tannehill needs to do a better job driving the football down the field and making big plays and that remains a work in progress. Meanwhile, the Dolphins’ defense looked much better in last week’s win over Baltimore than it did in back-to-back losses to the New York Jets and Dallas Cowboys and if they can find ways to generate pressure up front it will really help them disrupt the timing of the Giants’ offense and have their way with them.

Outlook & Pick

New York has won five of the last six meetings with the Dolphins overall and while both teams enter this week with identical 5-7 records the Giants are in the more desperate situation as they continue to battle for a playoff spot while Miami’s focus has already transitioned to finding ways to improve for next season. The Giants could very well be 8-3 or 9-2 had they done a better job protecting fourth-quarter leads this season and they get another chance to redeem themselves with a favorable matchup on Monday Night Football this week.

Pick: New York -1
