Stafford, Lions Set To Clash With Brees, Saints On Monday Night Football

Posted by on 12/18/2015 8:58:12 PM

The New Orleans Saints snapped a string of four straight losses with a win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last week. They will try to continue their climb back towards the .500 mark when they host the Detroit Lions on Monday Night Football. The Saints and Lions were expected to contend for a playoff spot this season but things went sour for both teams in a hurry and now they enter this week a combined eight games below .500. Each team still has a lot to play for with an eye towards building for next season and while the playoff contention appeal isn’t there this should be a pretty good Monday Night Football matchup.

NFL Betting Line: New Orleans -3

What It Will Take For The Lions To Win:

Detroit came to life with three straight wins in November but their stunning loss to the Green Bay Packers on a last-second Hail Mary touchdown pass ended their win streak with a tremendous thud and they couldn’t recover in time to beat the St. Louis Rams last week as they dropped their second in a row. Matt Stafford threw for 245 yards and two touchdowns but he also threw an interception and was sacked four times. Stafford will need to be better this week and should have an easier time against a Saints’ defense that has been torched over and over again this season. The Lions’ passing attack will be the key to their success on offense but they will also need their defense to step up the way they did in wins over the Packers, Oakland Raiders and Philadelphia Eagles earlier in the season. Detroit has shown flashes of its potential to be a playoff contending team but consistency has been a major issue all year and they will need to be at their best in New Orleans.

What It Will Take For The Saints To Win:

The Saints snapped a four-game slide with last week’s 24-17 win over the Buccaneers but they have also been one of the worst teams in the NFL in terms of overall consistency with far too many lapses over the course of the year. Drew Brees was excellent for New Orleans against Tampa Bay as he threw for 312 yards and a pair of touchdowns and he will need to find a way to pick apart the Lions defense in order to give them a chance. Tim Hightower had 85 yards with a touchdown against the Buccaneers and if he can get going it would take some of the pressure off of Brees and the vertical passing game. Meanwhile, the New Orleans defense held Tampa Bay to 17 points to mark the first time all season they have held an opponent below 21 points. The Saints defense will need to step up again this week in order to keep Stafford and company from regaining any momentum they have lost the last two weeks.

Outlook & Pick

Detroit has the potential to put up some points in this game but the Lions have been far too inconsistent all year and it’s hard to trust them on the road in New Orleans on Monday night. The Saints finally found their rhythm for a big home win last week and as long as the offense continues to play at a high level and the defense at least contains Detroit’s attack they should be able to win this game and cover at home.

Pick: New Orleans -3
