2015 NFL Football Betting – Patriots vs. Jets Preview

Posted by Stan Simmons on 12/26/2015 2:35:28 AM

The NFL football season works toward the end of the line on Sunday, and the New England Patriots are trying to claim home-field advantage throughout the AFC playoffs. If they beat the New York Jets, they’ll take a big step toward that goal.

New England Patriots @ New York Jets – Sunday, December 27

Betting Line: Patriots -3

Why The Patriots Will Win

This is a game the Patriots can still win in spite of the injuries to their backs and receivers. Having Rob Gronkowski as Tom Brady’s favorite target will draw extra attention from the Jets’ linebackers and safeties. This should open up other parts of the Patriots’ offense, both in the passing game and in the running game.

The basic point about the Patriots is that you need to hit huge plays to beat them. Denver was able to hit some big plays in the passing game in order to come back from a 21-7 deficit against New England. A week later, Philadelphia got a long interception return, a blocked kick, and other abrupt game-changing plays.

The challenge for the Jets is to hit big plays on offense against the Patriots’ defense. Quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick has historically struggled against the Patriots, and with the weight of the past on his shoulders, Fitzpatrick is not likely to play well. He has to come up big, but he’s probably not going to.

Why The Jets Will Win

The Patriots are so decimated by injuries that they simply might not have enough offense to win this game. Tackle Nate Solder. Fullback James Develin. Wide receiver Julian Edelman. Receiver Danny Amendola. Running back Dion Lewis. Running back LeGarrette Blount. These are just the offensive injuries the Patriots have suffered, and they don’t even include the players who are questionable for Sunday’s game. Blockers, pass protectors, receivers, running backs, they’ve all fallen this season and have deprived Tom Brady of a full complement of weapons. At least Rob Gronkowski is in the lineup, but the Jets are going to be able to take him away and force other less skilled players to beat them. All in all, this looks and feels like a game which will be tied, 17-17, in the final few minutes. All it’s going to take for the Jets to win is one third-down conversion on offense and a lack of key turnovers or special teams mistakes. The Jets, playing at home and in pursuit of a playoff berth, have a tremendous chance to beat the Patriots. They came close at New England earlier in the season when the Patriots were a lot less injured. This game sets up well for them.

Who Will Win

The idea that New England has no offense is not quite true, but it’s clear that the Patriots have more limited options than normal. However, the Jets are a notoriously inconsistent team, and they have had problems scoring on the Patriots over the years. The Jets normally play the Patriots very close, but they usually fall short.
