The Nike Swoosh and Jordan Jump Man meet the iconic block M

People waited in the streets for up to three hours as the merger of some of the biggest symbols in sports unfolded.

This was the marriage of the Nike swoosh, the Michael Jordan jump man and the University of Michigan block M. It was launched earlier this week and it has already meant millions for the companies and the University.

Michigan broke away from Adidas and signed a 15-year, $174 million deal with Nike. The additional excitement comes with Michigan being the first football program to be represented by the Jumpman logo.

The grand launch happened in Ann Arbor just a couple miles down from Michigan Stadium where the Wolverines will wear the jerseys for the first time this fall. During a festive downtown 26 hours before Nike began its assault on the market, thousands showed up at the stroke of midnight armed with credit cards and cash.

The average person spent $300 each.

Former Michigan running back Jamie Morris and Marcus Ray signed autographs and told folks about a new afternoon show they are hosting on a local radio station. There were fans dressed like Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh and giant Nike swooshes walked among the masses.

It was big business and a big deal.

Michigan‘s deal with Adidas expired, which ended one of the most non-creative eras in apparel history. But the block M still sells. It simply will sell more with the merger with Nike. Fans were enthusiastic and ready to spend.
