The Golden Bear gives the Golden Mouth a key sports endorsement

Golf legend Jack Nicklaus plans to vote for controversial Republican Presidential candidate Donald Trump. The two have enjoyed business relationships in the past and Nicklaus called Trump a “good guy” during an interview with CBS Sunday Morning’s Jim Axelrod. They collaborated last at the Trump Links at Ferry Point in a venture that opened in April of 2015 in New York.

Nicklaus became uncomfortable talking about Trump’s specific policies and said he believes Trump is smart enough to become more presidential. However, Trump has struggled with appealing to blacks, Mexicans and women during his bombastic rallies, some of which has resulted in violent confrontations.

He appeals mostly to white males without a college education. Even the GOP is slow to rally around him. But Nicklaus has, even though he did not want to get political during the interview. They’ve developed a friendship as Nicklaus develops golf courses that Trump finances. Trump even attended the ceremony when Nicklaus was given the Congressional gold medal a year ago.

“I like what Donald has done. I like that he’s turning America upside down,” Nicklaus said. “He’s awakening the country. We need a lot of that.”

Nicklaus is correct about that. Trump continues to fill arenas although he has already eliminated a crowded Republican field. He has not begun his campaign in earnest against presumed Democrat candidate Hillary Clinton, who leads Bernie Sanders by a wide margin.

Nicklaus said he and Trump have had wonderful business relationships and he respects the man.

“Is he a politician? Is he as smooth and politically correct as he should be? Probably not,” Nicklaus said. “But he’ll learn. He’s not stupid. He didn’t get where he was being dumb. I like the guy. He’s a good man. And certainly if he’s the one that’s on the ticket, I’ll be voting for him.”

A number of others in the sports world plan to vote for Trump. The list includes former Indiana coach Bob Knight, former football coach Lou Holtz, former boxer Mike Tyson, former basketball coaches Digger Phelps and Gene Keady, former NBA player Dennis Rodman and former MLB pitcher John Rocker.

The Hillary Clinton endorsers are Jason Collins (the first openly gay athlete to play in the NFL), former skater Michelle Kwan, soccer player Abby Wambach, former tennis player Billy Jean King and former NBA great Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.
