Serena Williams ties Steffi Graf in tennis Majors

Let the debates begin.

Who is a better tennis player? Was it the style and precision of Steffi Graf or the power and grace of Serena Williams? It is the longevity and staying power of Williams against the short burst of Graf.

Serena Williams tied Graf with 22 grand slam titles when she defeated Angelique Kerber 7-5, 6-3 in the Wimbledon Finals. They have the most Grand Slams in the Open era although Margaret Court won 24 Grand Slam titles, some of which came before the Open era.

Women’s tennis was one of high burnout and injuries. Most women retired before age 30 never to be heard from again. Graf won her final grand slam in 1999 at the French Open just before turning 30. Williams turns 35 in September.

Williams defied burnout mostly because she did not play as many tournaments during the year. The idea was to avoid burnout, which caused friction within the tennis world. Serena and her sister Venus, who is older, were ranked high despite not grinding it out during the season. Other players resented that.

They were selective in tournaments and spent off weeks working on their clothing line or relaxing around the world. Graf ground it out and was ready to settle down before 30.

Here are comparisons between Graf and Williams.

Williams won Wimbledon seven times, the US Open and Australian Open six apiece and the French Open three times. She owns a record of 768-127, was ranked number one for 300 weeks and has 71 singles titles.

Graf also won Wimbledon seven times. The other title breakdowns were French (six), US Open (five) and Australian (four). She held the number one ranking for 377 weeks, was 900-115 and won 107 singles titles.

It is difficult to measure who would win head to head. However, Graf has this advantage. She won 88.6 percent of her matches compared to an 85.8 win percentage by Williams.

After tying her record Graf sent out congratulations on Facebook.

“What an incredible performance by Serena at Wimbledon! Such a gift to all sports fans who get to continue to watch her add to an already amazing career #22!!! Also, well done to Angelique making Germany so proud with her talent and fighting spirit!”
