Hendricks Wary Of Lawler’s Knockout Power Heading In To UFC 171 Title Bout

Posted by Tank Johnson on 3/10/2014 9:31:06 PM

When Georges St. Pierre spoke up about Johny Hendricks being the next UFC Welterweight champion, there were many around the MMA community that had harsh words for him. After all, GSP beat Hendricks to retain his title in what may have been his final UFC fight back at UFC 167, even though most people felt the split decision should have gone to Hendricks. Now, Hendricks is set to battle Robbie Lawler for the vacant UFC Welterweight title, and he has a different take on the fight. Hendricks has said that Lawler is a more dangerous opponent than GSP was, and that it will be a more dangerous fight when they meet at UFC 171 this Saturday night.

Johny Hendricks vs. Robbie Lawler
Saturday March 15, 2014
American Airlines Center, Dallas, Texas
UFC Betting Pick: Hendricks – 260

Hendricks talked about the differences between GSP and Lawler, saying that he knows that he can be knocked out in an instant if he makes a mistake this weekend. Hendricks is a decent favorite heading in to this fight, but he is way of Lawler and the knockout power that he brings to the Octagon.

UFC Betting Preview: Johny Hendricks

Hendricks landed several big blows of his own and successfully defended the takedown when he took on GSP, but it wasn’t enough for him to win the title. Another performance like that will all but guarantee that Hendricks goes home with the belt, but patience could be the key. While Hendricks is known as an aggressive fighter with incredible power of his own, he has to be careful not to get caught in a bout that he is favored to win. Hendricks has the edge in almost every area heading in to this fight, and can’t afford to make that critical mistake that would end up costing him.

UFC Betting Preview: Robbie Lawler

Lawler is clearly known for his punching power, as 18 of his 22-career victories have come via knockout. However, Lawler is also capable of picking his spots, and he understands what this opportunity means. After flaming out towards the end of his Strikeforce career, Lawler has rejuvenated himself with three-straight wins in the UFC, earning this shot at the title. It won’t be easy for him to match Hendrick’s ability on the ground, so he will have to do a good job of defending the takedown and not get caught.

UFC Betting Preview: Outlook & Pick

Even if Lawler is able to avoid spending a lot of time on his back, he still is in tough to beat a fighter as talented as Hendricks on this stage. Hendricks is the superior fighter in nearly every area heading in to this bout, and as long as he doesn’t get too caught up in the hype and leaves himself vulnerable, he should find a way to finally win that UFC Welterweight title.
