MMA Betting: UFC Fight Night: Teixeira vs. St. Preux

Posted by The Wiesguy on 8/6/2015 4:17:13 AM

This weekend UFC Fight Night 73: Teixeira vs. St. Preux will be live from Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tennessee. The MMA world might still be buzzing about Ronda Rousey but we will refocus on Saturday August 8 on a pretty good card.

The main event will be a light heavyweight battle between Glover Teixeira and Ovince St. Preux. Teixeira has not won a fight since the last time he was on Fight Night. Sure, that is only a span of just two fights, including a loss in which he really challenged Jon Jones for the light heavyweight title. He pushed the champ before losing a unanimous decision, a result that was repeated in a follow up loss to Phil Davis last fall. Fighting is not supposed to be about emotion but he needs a win and is just a slight favourite at -117.

St. Preux is a very accomplished fighter coming into this bout having knocked out his opponent in the first round in his last two fights. He has lost just once since coming to UFC, a decision against Ryan Bader, who Teixeira handled in one round in Brazil a couple of years back. The odds show that St. Preux is a very small underdog at +103 and this should really be anyone’s fight.

Second on the bill is a lightweight bout between Michael Johnson and Beneil Dariush. Dariush has lost just once since coming to UFC and was a lightweight champ with RITC. Still he is the underdog against the much more experienced Johnson. Like the marquee bout this should be another battle. Johnson has won his last four fights but three of those have gone the distance. This card might be lacking a title bout and A-list stars but the last two fights of the night should definitely be worth the price of admission.

There is only one undefeated fighter on the main card and that is Geane Herrera. He is 8-0 and moving up the flyweight ranks in a hurry thanks to the fact that most of his fights are over quickly - six of eight didn’t even last a full round. He takes on Ray Borg who has a similar profile with just a single loss, 8-1. This is one where the odds tell us a lot though, as Borg is an overwhelming favourite at -400. The opinion appears to be that Herrera is not quite ready for primetime while Borg has proven that he can compete within the UFC with a 2-1 record.

Returning to more playable odds is the tilt between Tom Watson and Chris Camozzi. Camozzi is the favourite at -157 even though neither fighter has been all that impressive of late. Both have lost to Rafael Natal in the last year and they are just a combined 3-6 over that time period. The best victory by either was probably by Watson who needed a decision to beat Sam Alvey, another fighter who is on this card vs. Derek Brunson. Brunson is -390.
