VanZant, Miller Look To Make Their Marks At Upcoming UFC Fight Night Event

Posted by on 12/3/2015 11:47:44 PM

Paige VanZant’s pursuit of a UFC championship belt continues at the UFC Fight Night 80 event where she will clash with Rose Namajunas in the main event at The Chelsea at The Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas, Nevada. VanZant has strung together four straight wins to put herself in the title picture and she can move one step closer to getting her shot with a win over Namajunas. Here is a look at the best bets for the main card of the UFC Fight Night: Namajunas vs. VanZant event.

Women’s Strawweight Bout

(3-2-0) Rose Namajunas vs. Paige VanZant (6-1-0)

VanZant was originally supposed to fight Joanne Calderwood in the main event but the latter was forced to withdraw because of injury and it was Namajunas who was selected to step in on short notice. Namajunas bounced back from consecutive losses with a submission win over Angela Hill at the UFC 192 event but she doesn’t have the same profile as VanZant, who at just 21-years-old is a rising star in the sport. VanZant is coming off an impressive submission win over Alex Chambers that made it clear she was ready to be considered a legitimate title contender in the women’s strawweight division and while she understands the path to a title shot she has admitted she is in no rush to challenge the current women’s champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk. Right now her focus is clearly on taking down Namajunas and taking another step in the right direction and the reality is that VanZant has looked that much more confident and aggressive with every passing bout so there is no reason to expect her to lose this fight as she continues to climb the ladder as one of the UFC’s rising stars.

Pick: VanZant

Lightweight Bout

(25-6) Jim Miller vs. Michael Chiesa (12-2)

The veteran Miller is coming off a split decision win over Danny Castillo but there are legitimate concerns about how much he has left in the tank as a 32-year-old brawler that had lost his previous two fights before that. Chiesa on the other hand bounced back from his TKO loss to Joe Lauzon with a unanimous decision win over Mitch Clarke and he has won three of his last four bouts overall. Neither fighter has shown enough aggression to expect them to come out firing and try to end this fight early so look for Miller and Chiesa to go the distance with the younger of the two coming out on top via decision.

Pick: Chiesa

Lightweight Bout

(6-0-0) Sage Northcutt vs. Cody Pfister (12-4-1)

The first of two lightweight bouts on the main card will feature one of the rising stars in the division in Northcutt taking on Pfister. Northcutt debuted in the UFC with an impressive TKO win over Francisco Trevino that took just 57 seconds and he has won all six of his professional MMA bouts via either TKO or submission. Pfister might last longer than Trevino did but look for the 19-year-old Northcutt to come out on fire and try to end this fight as soon as possible with another statement win.

Pick: Northcutt

Middleweight Bout

(11-0-0) Elias Theodorou vs. Thiago Santos (11-3-0)

The opening bout of the main card will feature another rising star in Theodorou, who has opened his pro career with 11 straight wins including the last three in the UFC. Theodorou is a rising star in the middleweight division and while the veteran Santos should give him his toughest test so far there is every reason to like the youngsters chances in this one. Theodorou has shown his versatility with five knockout wins and another two via submission and while Santos is a dangerous fighter the undefeated Theodorou should be able to find a way to extend his perfect run.

Pick: Theodorou
