MMA Betting: Fight Night Cerrone-Miller Preview

Posted by The Wiesguy on 7/14/2014 10:34:04 PM

UFC Fight Night 45, Cerrone vs. Miller, is coming up quick on Wednesday July 16 at the Revel Casino in Atlantic City, New Jersey. For fight fans who like to keep a few bucks in their pocket they will be pleased to see this will be broadcast on Fox Sports 1.

The headlining bout for this card pits lightweights Donald Cerrone and Jim Miller, both very experienced fighters with more than 20 wins to their credit each. Cerrone has fought twice this season and won both, needing less than a round to achieve victory. He is currently the 7th ranked lightweight according to Fight magazine, helping to make him the favourite in this one at -250.

Jim Miller, is not a tomato can, he is the 13th ranked fighter according to Fight. His last loss in the ring was back in 2012 but he is not nearly as physically imposing as Cerrone who is three inches taller. The last time he fought a fighter of Cerrone’s caliber was Nate Diaz who beat him in two rounds. He seems to be beating the fighters he is supposed to so if he was able to score an upset at +210 it would be quite a surprise.

Cerrone vs. Miller is only one of 5 lightweight tilts on the bill. Further down the weight class rankings you will find Edson Barboza and Evan Dunham at 25 and 45 respectively. That might seem like a huge gap but for this sort of thing the difference becomes less pronounced the deeper you go. Barboza is the definitive favourite at -235 coming off a loss in his last fight to Cerrone. Oddly enough Dunham also lost his last fight to Cerrone and has lost three of his last 4 tilts.

According to the oddsmakers the best fight of the night should be another lightweight battle between Joe Proctor and Justin Salas, neither are ranked, but they are pretty evenly matched. Salas, the J-Bomb is the favourite at -145. He has more fights under his belt but more losses too. He was very sharp in his last outing, a first round knockout of Ben Wall. Proctor is 9-2 coming into this one but too many of his fights go to decisions for my liking. If you are going to back an underdog I would be more inclined to do so with one who can knock opponents on their ass.

If you like watching the ladies you are in luck with this card as their are two bouts featuring them. The first is a strawweight fight between Claudia Gadelha and Tina Lahdemaki; the other a bantamweight bout between Jessamyn Duke and Leslie Smith. The first ladies bout features fighters that have yet to lose, going a combined 16-0, so there is at least that on the line.

There are two other undefeated fighters on this card, Alex White and Aljamain Sterling. White is a -160 favourite but there is currently no line on Sterling. Both are fighting opponents with only one loss in Lucas Martins and Hugo Viana.
