MMA Betting: UFC Fight Night: Mendes vs. Lamas

Posted by The Wiesguy on 4/2/2015 11:55:42 PM

The next UFC Fight Night is coming up soon on Saturday April 4 at the Patriot Center in Fairfax, Virginia. The card will be headlined by a featherweight bout between Chad Mendes and Ricardo Lamas. You may want to note the time as this one starts in the daytime at 1:00PM EST, a rarity in the fight game. In team sports this can sometimes be a factor but it is hard to say what impact if any it will have on the fighters involved. There are not a lot of big names on this fight.

The main event between Chad Mendes and Ricardo Lamas looks like a pretty balanced tilt. Mendes is looking to bounce back from his five round decision loss to Jose Aldo, the only fighter who have beaten him in the octagon (twice). Lamas has only lost a total of three fights in his career including a five round decision to Aldo last year (same as Mendes). These are two very experienced fighters but the odds are very much in favour of Mendes who is as high as -460 in some spots.

According to the odds the best fight of the night should be between ladies Liz Carmouche and Lauren Murphy. Carmouche has not fought in nearly a year and has not won in more than a year and half but she is the favourite here. Kudos on the nickname Girl-Rilla. Murphy started her career with eight straight wins but lost her last bout to Sara McMann. She has had success knocking out opponents but has not fought in seven months. Carmouche is the slight favourite at -115.

Shifting back to the men another good bout should be Dustin Poirier vs. Carlos Diego Ferreira. Poirier is the favourite at -150 but he is coming off a loss to Conor McGregor in his last tilt. Ferreira has only one loss to his name but it was also in his last fight, when he fell to Beneil Dariush back in October. Only time will tell if this is an indicator of his true level as a fighter or not. Both are looking for bounceback performances to climb up the featherweight rankings.

After Lamas the biggest underdog on the card is Canadian Mitch Clarke (+300) who is taking on Mike Chiesa. Both have identical 11-2 records and neither are in the division rankings so it is a little surprising to see Chiesa be such a heavy favourite, even if he is a little scary looking with his mountain man beard. He may be 11-2 for his career but he is 2-2 over his last four bouts. Clarke is also 2-2 of late but he has won his last two bouts including a choke out of highly regarded Al Iaquanta. For Top Gun movie fans one of these guys is nicknamed “Maverick” (Chiesa) and the other is “Danger Zone” (Clarke) - what are the odds. At a 3/1 payoff with not that much separating them I will take Clarke.
