Despite stumbling down the stretch at the PGA Championship on Sunday, Brooks Koepka is the co-favorite to win the Wyndham Championship this week. Koepka has been in the spotlight following his comments regarding Dustin Johnson, so he will be happy to get back on the course in an effort to win his first tournament in a little over a year. Webb Simpson is the co-favorite alongside Koepka at 10-1 per the golf betting odds, and he finished runner-up to Koepka in the latter’s most recent victory at the 2019 WGC Invitational.
Event Details
Event: Wyndham Championship
Category: PGA Tour
Date: August 13-16, 2020
Location: Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, North Carolina
Past Five Winners
2019: J.T. Poston -22
2018: Brandt Snedeker -21
2017: Henrik Stenson -22
2016: Kim Si-woo -21
2015: Davis Love III -17
Only five of the top ten golfers in the world will be playing this week’s Wyndham Championship. However, this is a very important event as it is the last tournament before the FedEx Cup Playoffs and the final week of the Wyndham Rewards Top 10 competition. J.T. Poston claimed his first title here last year, becoming the first player in 45 years to win a full tournament without shooting worse than par on any hole.
The Course
The last four winners of the Wyndham Championship have shot -21 or better, as this is one of the easier courses on the PGA Tour. A birdie was scored on more than half the cards on both of the par fives in 2019, and no hole on the front nine shot over par last year either.
This course gets a little tricky at the turn as golfers averaged a little over par on holes 10-12 in 2019. The scoring average on hole 14 was slightly over par, but the only two truly difficult holes are 11 and 18. Hole No. 11 is a long par four where it is difficult to challenge the green, while Hole No. 18 is surrounded by four bunkers and some steep drop-offs if you miss the green.
Value Play to Win the Event: Tommy Fleetwood +1600
Fleetwood might be the best player that has yet to win an event on the PGA Tour. He finished fourth at the 2017 US Open, and he was runner-up at the 2018 US Open and the 2019 British Open. Fleetwood was in contention on Friday and Saturday at the PGA Championship, sitting two shots back after his second round and three shots back going into Sunday. Unfortunately, he shot a 73 on the last day to knock himself out of the race. Still, Fleetwood should thrive at this course. He is one of the biggest hitters, ranking in the top 20 in driving distance, and that will serve him well.
Top 10 Prop: Justin Rose +180
It’s been an up-and-down season for Justin Rose. He has missed the cut in half of the 12 events he has entered, but he has grabbed three top ten finishes too. Rose finished ninth at last week’s PGA Championship, showing consistency that he has lacked throughout the year with a scorecard of 66-68-70-67. His precision around the green is likely to serve him well here, and he has a history of shining on similar courses.
