2020 League of Legends KeSPA Cup Finals

The reigning League of Legends world champions are massive favorites coming into the KeSPA Cup Finals. For whatever reason, DAMWON Gaming weren’t favorites to win this tournament at the start of the event, but they proved that was a mistake with their play over the last two weeks. DAMWON Gaming have only dropped one game on their way to the KeSPA Cup Finals, and they hammered finals opponent Nongshim Red Force in the first game of this tournament.

These teams opened the tournament in a game that wasn’t close. Nongshim prioritized getting ahead in the early game, drafting Olaf, Twisted Fate, and Kalista. That allowed DAMWON to select two of the strongest champions on this patch in Samira and Graves, and Ghost and Canyon made a huge impact on those picks. Nongshim never pulled ahead in the early game like they needed to with this draft, and their first team fight ended disastrously thanks in no small part to a bad Twisted Fate ultimate from Bay. It was all downhill from there as DAMWON recorded 28 kills in a sub-30 minute win.

Matchup

The top lane is going to be something to watch in this series. Both Khan and Rich took tanks into the top lane in their last meeting, but that is likely to change this time. Although we are in a tank-heavy meta, Khan and Rich are two of the most aggressive top laners in the world, and they are both very skilled.

Khan has been known for his aggressiveness since he rose to prominence with Kingzone DragonX, and DAMWON are used to having an aggressive top laner as Nuguri was the previously top laner on this team.

Rich was one of the best Heroes of the Storm players before the competitive scene in that game fell apart, leading to him moving to League of Legends. He has proven to be a quick study in this game, but his overaggressive tendencies have gotten him into trouble. For Nongshim to pull off a massive upset, he will have to be on his game as his lane is one of two areas where this team can win through.

The other area where Nongshim can be competitive is the jungle. Canyon might be the best jungler in the world at the moment, but this position is notoriously volatile. Top-tier junglers fluctuate more often than any other position, and his counterpart can attest to that. Nongshim jungler Peanut was seen as the best jungler in the world for a couple years when he was in Korea, but he only recently returned to prominence after spending most of the last two years in the wilderness. Peanut played a huge role in LGD Gaming’s surprising run to Worlds and came back to Korea at the end of the season. He has previous experience playing with Rich too during their time with Gen.G.

DAMWON have a massive edge in the mid lane and a strong edge in the bottom lane. ShowMaker is an incredibly talented mid laner that could rival Faker as the greatest to ever play the game at the end of his career. He had three accounts ranked in the top ten in Korea last year, and he has shown dominance on over a dozen champions. Former Griffin sub Bay has talent, but he still needs a lot of development before he can consistently challenge the best.

BeryL is an incredible playmaker at support. He has helped Ghost flourish after he was seen as a lost cause by other LCK teams, turning this team into a world champion. They are much more proven than Nongshim’s duo of Deokdam and Kellin.

Prediction

DAMWON Gaming are going to win the KeSPA Cup, but it’s hard to lay this kind of juice. The better options are on the game line where DAMWON are a little better than even money to get the sweep. At those odds, Nongshim is the pick, as the Red Force should take one game.
