China will be the first major region to return to Summoner’s Rift for the 2021 League of Legends season. There’s a good amount of buzz heading into the 2021 LPL Spring Split. The two world champions and last year’s split champions are the favorites going into the split, but there is a ton of depth in the LPL. We saw teams like LGD Gaming and Suning emerge from nowhere to make noise at last year’s World Championships, and there should be one team that emerges from the pack to challenge as a serious longshot.

The favorites coming into the 2020 World Championships were Top Esports. TES looked like the best team in the world after bringing JackeyLove aboard to play in the bottom lane. They fell short in the semifinals though, as they were defeated 3-1 by LPL counterparts Suning.
Despite that disappointing result, TES brought back their entire starting five from last year. This organization is looking to run it back with Knight playing extremely well in the mid lane and JackeyLove able to hard carry in the bottom lane. The X-Factor could be jungler Karsa though, as he shined throughout the 2020 campaign.
Invictus Gaming were the first LPL team to win Worlds in 2018. They rode Rookie, TheShy, and JackeyLove to the title, and every member of that team save the latter is still on the roster. IG have not been able to match that initial success though as JackeyLove was never truly replaced in the bottom lane, and the jungle position has been a bit of a disaster for the last couple years. That makes them a team to avoid despite the tempting odds.
The most interesting team this split might be FunPlus Phoenix. Doinb can still do it all in the mid lane, and they made a significant upgrade in the top lane by bringing over Nuguri from world champion DAMWON Gaming. Nuguri was known as a lane kingdom player just two years ago, but he developed into a true team player that can also win hard in the early game if needed for his side. That makes FPX even more dangerous, yet there are still issues in the bottom lane.
Spring Split champions JD Gaming are largely overlooked by the oddsmakers coming into 2021. They still have the Dumpling Brothers in Zoom and Yagao, and Kanavi can be a monster out of the jungle. However, this squad has needed to improve its bottom lane for some time now. LokeN just isn’t in the same class as the other players on this roster, so IG brought over Mystic from Korea to potentially replace him.
The best longshot on the board is Victory Five. We saw this team come out of nowhere to finish 11-5 in the Summer Split after failing to win a series in the Spring Split. They took a game off Suning before being bounced in the Summer Split Playoffs, and they made it to the quarterfinals of the Demacia Cup. Support PPGod and jungler Weiwei are real talented up and coming players.
