Best Bets at the 2022 Valspar Championship

Many of the golfers taking part in this year’s Valspar Championship will be on short rest after The PLAYERS Championship was forced to finish on Monday due to inclement weather earlier in the week. That led to some players bowing out of the Valspar Championship, but the big hitters that are still signed on for this event won’t have to travel far as this competition is in the Sunshine State too. Palm Harbor is just outside of Tampa, and the weather looks to be much more welcoming this weekend.

Justin Thomas, Collin Morikawa, and Viktor Hovland are seen as the three favorites to win the Valspar Championship this week. None of the three golfers have won here in the past, but they are gunning to claim the $1.4 million prize for winning the event.

Event Details

Event: Valspar Championship

Category: PGA Tour

Date: March 17-20, 2022

Location: Innisbrook Resort and Golf Club (Copperhead Course), Palm Harbor, Florida

Past Winners

2021: Sam Burns -17

2020: Canceled

2019: Paul Casey -8

2018: Paul Casey -10

2017: Adam Hadwin -14

Paul Casey would have been among the favorites to win the Valspar Championship. Casey became the first back-to-back winner in this event’s history in 2019, but he opted to withdraw from the competition on Tuesday. He finished in third place at The PLAYERS Championship on Monday, so he has been in good form too.

A lot of lesser-known golfers have won the Valspar Championship in recent years. Sam Burns, Adam Hadwin, John Senden, and Kevin Streelman have all won this event in the last decade, but all of them are relatively known outside of the golf community. With that in mind, it might be worth backing a longshot with juicy odds this weekend.

The Course

You won’t see a lot of low scores at Copperhead this week. The scoring average of 70.97 in 2021 on this par 71 course was the lowest we’ve seen in the last eight years. The winner has finished 10-under par or worse in six of the last eight tournaments. Additionally, the rough has been allowed to grow an extra half-inch, so golfers will need to take advantage of their birdie opportunities on par 5s.

Best Bet to Win the Valspar Championship: Sam Burns +2200

We didn’t have a golfer win consecutive titles at the Valspar Championship until Casey did it three years ago. Sam Burns is in prime position to repeat though, as he has been very good on the Florida swing. Burns finished three strokes ahead of Keegan Bradley to win the title last year, and he earned a T9 at Bay Hill two weeks ago and was in the running at the PLAYERS until a final round 76 knocked him out of the race. He was in fine form at the end of 2021 too with a win at Sanderson Farms, and four straight T7 finishes from October to December.

Value Play to Win the Valspar Championship: Adam Hadwin +5500

Another recent winner is also worth a bet at this price. Adam Hadwin claimed his only PGA Tour title at Palm Harbor five years ago. Hadwin is coming off a T9 finish at TPC Sawgrass last week after posting a 67 on Monday, so he is feeling good ahead of this event.
