Best Bets at the 2022 Mexico Open

The newest event on the PGA Tour is the Mexico Open. This has traditionally been the national championship for Mexico, and it was part of PGA TOUR Latinoamerica from 2013 to 2021. That means most golfers on the PGA Tour will be taking a look at the Vidanta Vallarta for the first time, but even competitors that have played here before won’t have much of an advantage. This course has been redesigned now that it is an official PGA Tour stop.

The overwhelming favorite per the golf betting odds to win the Mexico Open is Jon Rahm. The former No. 1 golfer in the world is looking to re-discover his form after disappointing results at The PLAYERS Championship and at the Masters. Every other golfer is currently 20-1 or more to win this event.

Event Details

Event: Mexico Open

Category: PGA Tour

Date: April 28-May 1, 2022

Location: Vidanta Vallarta, Vallarta, Mexico

Past Winners

2021: Alvaro Ortiz -23

2019: Drew Nesbitt -17

2018: Austin Smotherman -18

2016: Sebastian Vazquez -16

2015: Justin Hueber -23

The last two champions of the Mexico Open won’t be at this event since this is now a PGA Tour tournament. Drew Nesbitt would have been a popular pick to win the Mexico Open as he won the event in 2019 and finished T2 last year, but he is on the Korn Ferry Tour. However, 2018 champion Austin Smotherman will be taking part in this tournament, and he will certainly get some looks at 90-1.

Some of the other big names that will be teeing off at the Mexico Open are Abraham Ancer, Tony Finau, Kevin Na, and Patrick Reed. Most of the big names will be skipping the first Mexico Open on the PGA Tour though in order to focus on the next few events.

The Course

This is a par-71 course that checks in at 7,456 yards. There are five par 3s and four par 5s, so there are plenty of chances to make birdie for big hitters and precision strikers alike. Vidanta Vallarta is close enough to the ocean that winds can play a factor on certain days, and water is a major hazard with most of the par 3s. This course also protects the greens with over 100 bunkers, so it’s easy to get into trouble if you have issues with accuracy.

Best Bet to Win the Mexico Open: Abraham Ancer +2000

Mexico native Abraham Ancer would love to win this event. The 20th ranked golfer has not been sharp this season though, as he has just two T12 finishes to his credit in 13 events. Ancer missed the cut at two of his last three events, but he has plenty of experience playing in his home country.

Value Play to Win the Mexico Open: Charles Howell III +5500

We’re moving from one III to another III this week by backing Charles Howell III as the longshot to win the Mexico Open. Howell has missed the cut in three of his last five events, but he finished T4 at the Valero Texas Open earlier this month, and that’s something that means a lot this week. TPC San Antonio and Vidanta Vallarta are both courses designed by Greg Norman, so Howell should fare better than he has recently.
