This year’s Wells Fargo Championship will not be held at Quail Hollow. For just the second time in the last 20 years, the venue will be changing for this tournament, and unlike the last time it will take place outside of North Carolina. TPC Potomac at Avenal Farm in Maryland will be the site for this event, and this will be the first time that many of the golfers taking part in this competition have seen this course.
Rory McIlroy is seen as the big favorite by the PGA Tour betting odds entering this event. McIlroy has won the Wells Fargo Championship three times in his career, but he has never teed off at TPC Potomac as a professional golfer. That means its worth focusing on other golfers further down the board this week.
Event Details
Event: Wells Fargo Championship
Category: PGA Tour
Date: May 5-8, 2022
Location: TPC Potomac at Avenal Farm, Potomac, Maryland
Past Winners
2021: Rory McIlroy -10
2019: Max Homa -15
2018: Jason Day -12
2017: Brian Harman -10
2016: James Hahn -9
McIlroy is the only golfer that has won the Wells Fargo Championship multiple times. He set a tournament record by shooting 21-under on his way to his second title in 2015, beating Patrick Rodgers and Webb Simpson by seven strokes. It’s tough to put as much faith in him this time though due to his unfamiliarity with this course.
The Course
TPC Potomac at Avenal Farm checks in at 7,160 yards. This is a par 70 course, and it was the home for the Quicken Loans National in 2017 and 2018 before the event was moved to Detroit and became the Rocket Mortgage Classic. It has been revamped over the last four years, and a few holes have been completely redesigned after some harsh criticism. The weather is expected to be close to perfect this weekend, so we should see some low scores at this tournament.
Best Bet to Win the Wells Fargo Championship: Corey Conners +1800
Although Corey Conners has only won one PGA Tour event, he is the second favorite at the Wells Fargo Championship behind McIlroy. Conners came in third place at the WGC Match Play Championship a little over a month ago, and he earned a T6 finish at the Masters. These are the kinds of courses that he shines on as he isn’t a big hitter, but Conners is a precise ball striker.
Value Play to Win the Wells Fargo Championship: Marc Leishman +3300
This is one of my favorite longshots in quite some time. Marc Leishman is one of the few golfers that has experience at TPC Potomac, earning a T5 finish in 2017 and a T13 finish in 2018. He is the top-ranked golfer on the PGA Tour in terms of par 3 scoring, and he posted low numbers at similar courses earlier this season. His odds should be closer to 25-1, so there is real value here.
