MONDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL WEEK 5: GREEN BAY PACKERS AT LAS VEGAS RAIDERS

BY ADAM GREENE

You know, the NFL schedule makers generally do a fantastic job. So much so that the day they role out the new schedule every May has now become a serious event. Which is why it baffles me how anyone working in that office thought this could be a solid prime time match up as the Green Bay Packers travel to Sin City to take on the Las Vegas Raiders on Monday Night Football.

This will just be the 15th meeting all time between the two franchises. The Packers lead the series 9-5. Green Bay has won eight straight dating all the way back to 1990. They last met on Oct. 20, 2019, with the Pack winning 42-24. Derek Carr (now with the New Orleans Saints) was 22 of 28 for 293 yards, two touchdowns and an interception in the loss. Josh Jacobs rushed 21 times for 124 yards. Darren Waller (now with the New York Giants) caught seven passes for 126 yards and two TDs.

In the win, Mr. Johnson & Johnson himself, Aaron Rodgers (now with the New York Jets, technically) was 25 of 31 for 429 yards and five touchdowns with no picks. He also scrambled twice for six yards and a score. Aaron Jones rushed 12 times for 50 yards. Marquez Valdes-Scantling (now with the Kansas City Chiefs) caught two passes for 133 yards and a TD.

Location: Allegiant Stadium, Las Vegas, Nev.

Broadcast: ABC/ESPN

Kickoff: Oct. 9. 8:15 p.m.

GREEN BAY PACKERS (2-2)

Last week, in another inexplicable Prime Time appearance, the Packers were crushed 34-20 by the Detroit Lions on Thursday Night Football. Jordan Love was 23 of 36 passing for 246 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions in the loss. He did rush for a TD and was sacked five times. Aaron Jones “led” the team in rushing with five carries for 18 yards. Romeo Dobbs caught nine passes for 95 yards. The defense sacked Jared Goff twice and picked him off once.

LAS VEGAS RAIDERS (1-3)

In a match up of two of the worst head coaches in the NFL, the Raiders and Josh McDaniels came up short once again (because of course they did), losing 24-17 to the Los Angeles Chargers in spite of Brandon Staley attempting to hand them the game with a blown fourth down conversion attempt late in their own territory. With Jimmy Garoppolo out in the concussion protocol, rookie Aiden O’Connell got the nod, going 24 of 39 passing for 238 yards, no touchdowns and a pick. He rushed for a score and was sacked seven times, six by Khalil Mack. Their baby will be due in July. Josh Jacobs had 17 carries for 58 yards and a TD, adding eight receptions for 81 yards. The defense sacked Justin Herbert twice and intercepted him once.

THE PICK

I’d like to apologize to both Joe Buck and Troy Aikman for what we’re all about to witness. If the NFL schedulers had checked with me, we could have avoided this one and had maybe a Philadelphia Eagles at Los Angeles Rams matchup instead. Maybe next year they’ll take me up on it. Packers 27, Raiders 16
