With the MLS soccer season nearing the midway point both Conferences remain extremely competitive. LAFC has opened up an 8 point advantage in the West over second place Seattle but the East remains wide open with first place DC United holding on to a 1 point lead over Philadelphia. The parity continues down the table with the #1 through #6 teams separated by a total of six points. The Montreal Impact are currently in a third place tie with the New York Red Bulls with both teams 3 points behind Philadelphia and 4 behind DC United. On Wednesday night, they’ll welcome Real Salt Lake to the Stade Saputo for a midweek contest.
Real Salt Lake enters this matchup in sixth place in the West but with the exception of Los Angeles things are equally as competitive here as in the East with only 8 points separating the second and seventh place teams. RSL has won 3 of their last five though they come into this game on a 2 game losing streak after identical 2-1 losses to the LA Galaxy and Portland Timbers. They’ve also lost 2 straight road games dropping their record away from Rio Tinto to 2-1-4 on the year. RSL has scored 9 away goals this season while conceding 13.
Montreal has only 1 win in their last 5 with 3 losses and a draw. They’ll be happy to return home where they are 3-1-1 this season though they’re winless in their last two here with a 0-0 draw against New England and a 2-0 loss to New York City. It’s been feast or famine for Montreal away from home this year–they have 4 road wins but 5 road losses along with a pair of draws. The fact that they’re in a fairly decent spot on the table is impressive given that 11 of their first 15 games have been played away from home.
Real Salt Lake has been a woefully inconsistent team all season long and particularly on the road. They looked solid in away victories against Cincinnati and Colorado but played poorly in defeats against DC United (a 5-0 blowout), Los Angeles, Seattle and the LA Galaxy. They’ve also done a poor job defending away from Rio Tinto with just two clean sheets in their last 15 away encounters. They’ve also not done well on their trips to Quebec and have lost the past three to Montreal at this venue by margins of 3-1, 4-1 and 3-2.
Given Salt Lake’s poor play against Montreal at this venue and their general inconsistency on the road the home team looks like a reasonable investment on the MLS soccer odds board. The Impact have seen totals results of 3 or more in 9 of 15 this year and given that and the recent form in the series we’ll look for this to go ‘Over’ the total.
BET MONTREAL IMPACT -1/2 -121 OVER REAL SALT LAKE
BET MONTREAL/REAL SALT LAKE OVER 2.5 -125
