Best Bets To Win The Safeway Open

Some of the world’s best golfers are in Napa, California this week to compete in the Safeway Open at the Silverado Resort. Once the PGA Tour’s season opener, the latest installment of the Safeway Open has been moved back on the schedule but actually up in the annual calendar. Previously called the Frys.com Open, the Silverado Resort has hosted this event every year since 2016. We took the time to break down the best bets on the board for this tournament including a look at the favorite, some value picks and one super sleeper that stands out. Here is a look at the best bets to win the Safeway Open.

THE FAVORITE

JUSTIN THOMAS +650

Thomas is the favorite to win this tournament for obvious reasons. The BMW Championship winner has finished no worse than T-12th in his six starts since the Scottish Open, including a T-3rd at the TOUR Championship. Perhaps just as important is how good that Thomas has performed at this course, where he placed in the top-eight in each of his last two trips including a T-3rd here in 2015. While the odds aren’t outstanding for a PGA event, Thomas is unquestionably the best bet to win this tournament.

VALUE PICKS

HIDEKI MATSUYAMA +1400

Matsuyama is an intriguing value pick for a number of reasons. First of all, his game is perfectly suited for a course like this. Matsuyama is a long hitting driver with plenty of power. He is also one of the most consistent golfers on the PGA Tour. After averaging a 69.25 in his last eight rounds at Silverado, Matsuyama seems primed to contend for the outright win this week. Still, he is somehow listed at +1400 odds. If you are looking to take a shot on a golfer that will provide excellent value with a pretty good chance to win, Matsuyama is the man.

RYAN MOORE +4000

We haven’t seen Moore since the BMW Championship. However, that’s a good thing because we know he is well-rested and confident heading in to this tournament. Moore has an outstanding track record at this tournament, including a scoring average of 69.33 here since 2013, so he should have no problem picking up where he left off in his last start. At +4000 odds, it’s hard to completely ignore the value betting on Moore to win the Safeway Open outright.

SLEEPER PICKS

SEBASTIAN MUNOZ +5000

Coming off his first career PGA Tour victory at the Sanderson Farms Championship on Sunday, Munoz is going to head right back to work. Munoz, who made a 15-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole to force a playoff before winning that event on the first extra hole, could be in for a bit of an emotional letdown this week. Or, he could build off the confidence gained from that victory and go right back to work in Napa. At +5000, Munoz might be worth taking a flyer on to double down this week. If you’re feeling less risky, take a look at him for the Top 10 props.
