ATP Kremlin Cup Tournament Tennis Preview

The 2019 edition of the Kremlin Cup is about to start. From 1990 through 2018, this event was played in the Olympic Stadium’s indoor sports complex. Now, it will move to a new venue, the Ice Palace Krylatskoye, as it maintains its existence in Moscow. This is a late-season tournament in which some players in the top 10 will participate. These top-10 players will try to position themselves for the ATP Finals coming up in London in November.

BEST BET TO WIN IT

As the 2019 tennis season continues, Daniil Medvedev continues to show that he is for real. Medvedev is currently in the quarterfinals of the Shanghai Masters. This builds on the St. Petersburg title he won in September, two weeks after the U.S. Open, in which Medvedev reached the final. Medvedev has reached the finals of five straight tournaments: Washington, D.C., Montreal, Cincinnati, the U.S. Open, and St. Petersburg. If he can make the final in Shanghai, that would be six straight. He would be trying to make a seventh straight final in Moscow.

Given how very consistent he has been and given that other players are giving him their best shot, the fact that Medvedev keeps fending off these challenges from other players shows that he is a growing force on the ATP Tour and someone who has to be taken very seriously. Maybe he will get tired at this tournament, but that kind of bet – that Medvedev will run out of gas – has not been a good bet at recent tournaments. He’s won more matches on the hard courts than any other player this year. That’s why he’ll be among the tennis betting favorites here and is a good bet to win it.

BEST LONGSHOT WORTH A FLIER

Andrey Rublev is the No. 6 seed, but next to Medvedev, he has been playing the best ball of anyone who will come to this tournament. Rublev began his run in Cincinnati in August, where he beat Roger Federer and revived his 2019 season (had been interrupted by injuries). Rublev then went to the U.S. Open and beat two of the more popular young players in men’s tennis right now, Stefanos Tsitispas and Nick Kyrgios. He reached the fourth round and continued his solid run of form. Rublev then defeated 2018 Shanghai Masters runner-up Borna Coric in the early rounds of the 2019 Shanghai Masters tournament, eventually reaching the round of 16 before falling to Alexander Zverev.

Rublev is clearly a better bet to win this tournament than three seeded players above him: No. 3 Marin Cilic, No. 4 Dusan Lajovic, and No. 5 Cristian Garin.

PLAYER TO AVOID

Cilic is an obvious choice of someone you want to avoid on the tennis lines. He has had a terrible year. A less easy choice but still a player to avoid is the No. 2 seed, Karen Khachanov. While Medvedev has risen to the top tier of the men’s game, Khachanov can’t seem to get going. He has a good tournament every now and then, but he lacks consistency, and he continues to lose to players he should beat, the latest example being Fabio Fognini in Shanghai. Khachanov is just 6-5 in his last 11 matches and while he has the talent to be an elite player, he rarely shows it.
