It’s Debate Night! The fourth Democratic Debate will be held outside of Columbus, Ohio tonight and a record 12 candidates will be on the stage at the same time. This is the last chance for longshots like Julian Castro, Amy Klobuchar, and Tulsi Gabbard to make a name for themselves with the requirements to make next month’s debate ramping up, so expect to see some candidates taking calculated risks and plenty of verbal sparring. This will be a make or break night for fringe contenders.
WILL ANY CANDIDATE SAY A CURSE WORD OR BE BLEEPED?
YES +200
NO -300
In the spirit of the evening, this is my favorite bet for Tuesday. One of the 12 candidates on stage will want to leave a memorable impression and an impassioned speech with a choice word or two could resonate with certain blocs of voters. While none of the top candidates are likely to release a calculated or accidental swear, a young longshot like Castro or Gabbard should take the risk.
WILL FACEBOOK BE SAID BY ELIZABETH WARREN?
YES -250
NO +170
The vast majority of Americans have a Facebook account, but more and more people are unplugging from the massive social media network. Privacy scandals and other concerns have led to people becoming disenchanted with Facebook, and Elizabeth Warren has taken aim at Facebook over the last week.
Warren ran a fake ad highlighting some of the problems with Facebook’s policy when it comes to political ads, and she has received a lot of traction and positive responses from the gambit over the last week. While there isn’t a clear route for her to bring up Facebook, she is very likely to mention the billion-dollar company and CEO Mark Zuckerberg, so the odds on this Democratic Debate prop should be higher
WILL THE DEBATE BE INTERRUPTED BY A PROTESTOR?
YES -200
NO +150
This is an intriguing bet. The third debate was interrupted by protestors, and the LGBTQ town hall hosted by CNN last week was also interrupted by protestors. While security is likely to be tighter given what we have seen at the last two events, it only takes one or two people to make a scene and lead to the debate coming to a temporary halt. That seems like a probable outcome given the fractured state of American politics.
WILL HUNTER BIDEN BE SAID BY ANY CANDIDATE?
YES -200
NO +150
While Hunter Biden has been a popular antagonist amongst Donald Trump and Republicans, fellow Democrats have been hesitant to criticize Joe Biden’s son for alleged misdeeds. Nothing definitive has come out that Hunter Biden was involved in anything shady in the Ukraine, but it wasn’t a good look that the former Vice President’s son had some business dealings with the country while his father was VP.
Heavyweights like Warren, Bernie Sanders, and Kamala Harris are likely to avoid bringing up Hunter Biden, but one of the candidates struggling to make a dent in polls might take a swing at Biden’s son. The move would likely not go over well though, so I’ll take the ‘No’ at plus-money per the Democratic Debate betting odds.
WHICH TOPIC WILL RECEIVER THE MOST DEBATE TIME?
HEALTH CARE +200
GUN CONTROL +325
IMMIGRATION +350
ECONOMY +400
FOREIGN POLICY +500
CLIMATE CHANGE +800
CIVIL RIGHTS +1000
The moderators will have a large say in this prop. We know that Sanders and Warren will want to spend much of the night talking about health care as their policies are the centerpiece of their campaigns. However, other candidates will want to move on quickly and switch to another topic where they can potentially score more points with voters.
Health care was the most popular topic at the last debate, and it was the opening topic of the night. The moderators may decide to switch things up here this time, leading to value in taking another issue.
Foreign policy has been in the news a lot recently as Trump’s decision to withdraw troops from Syria has met with bipartisan criticism, so this could be worth a play at 5-1. The economy could receive a lot of discussion too considering its importance in a Rust Belt state like Ohio.
