Now that the ATP Nitto Finals are finished, the last major event for tennis bettors to focus on this season is the 2019 Davis Cup. This year’s edition involves a group-stage competition in which six three-team groups (comprising the 18 nations in the finals) will battle to advance to the quarterfinals.
The three team groups will have round-robin play with each other. Each meeting of two teams will have three matches – two singles, one doubles – all best-of-three sets. BetOnline has now posted odds on the groups, so here is a look at all six with odds for each:
GROUP A ODDS
FRANCE -140
SERBIA +135
JAPAN +800
With two singles and one doubles match per group competition, the importance of doubles is magnified. In the previous Davis Cup format, there would be four singles matches and one doubles. Here it’s just two singles and one doubles. Teams with one strong singles player and a top doubles team should win a competition.
Here, France is rightly the favorite because its doubles teams are world class. Serbia might win one point in singles, but France is the best bet to get two points because of its depth. Serbia could be competitive in doubles. Japan is not.
GROUP B ODDS
SPAIN +110
RUSSIA +135
CROATIA +400
Spain is the host country, but Russia has excellent singles depth. The Spain-Russia battle will depend on Spain splitting the singles points, since Spain has the superior doubles team. Having Roberto Bautista-Agut should enable Spain to do what it needs to do, but Russia winning would not surprise many people. The Russians have had a great 2019 season in tennis.
GROUP C ODDS
GERMANY -120
ARGENTINA +100
CHILE +1400
Juan Martin del Potro isn’t part of the Argentine team, which leaves Germany with the most singles depth. Chile doesn’t have an elite singles or doubles player. Germany has the most options and the best path to the quarterfinals from this group.
GROUP D ODDS
AUSTRALIA -250
BELGIUM +200
COLOMBIA +1400
All eyes will be on Nick Kyrgios at this event, and he will surely get a lot of publicity, but Australia’s superior doubles team gives the Aussies the true advantage over Belgium. Australia has the depth and the singles-doubles balance needed to move to the quarterfinals and make a run at the championship. The United States is the only country with more Davis Cup titles than Australia (32 to 28), so this is a chance for the Australians, in a new format, to reduce that gap.
GROUP E ODDS
GREAT BRITAIN -250
KAZAKHSTAN +400
NETHERLANDS +400
Kazakhstan and the Netherlands have only one formidable singles player, not two. This means that doubles is where the Kazakhs and the Dutch have to be able to win this group, but Great Britain has been elite in world doubles over the past decade, and its other two nations in this group have not. The Brits are rightly seen as heavy favorites because they won’t lose two singles matches and have the better doubles matchups here.
GROUP F ODDS
USA +125
CANADA +180
ITALY +225
Canada actually seems like the better choice here with its singles talent. Yes, if it gets to doubles, the Americans will hold the better cards, but if the Canadians can go 2-0 in singles, the doubles won’t matter. The Canadians are a good play here, especially since Americans have not generally done well in Europe.
