The Four Teams NFL Bettors Love in Week 16

A smart bettor knows to monitor line movements as the week goes along. Often when the bet is made is nearly as important as who the bet is on. Here are Week 16’s biggest spread moves and the likely reasons for said moves.

HOUSTON TEXANS (-3) @ TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS
OPENING: HOUSTON TEXANS (PK) @ TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS

The Bucs are getting a lot of love due to their four-game winning streak. On closer inspection, it’s not quite as impressive. The teams they beat were Atlanta (5-9), Jacksonville (5-9), Indianapolis (6-8) and Detroit (3-10). Three of the four were in the middle of long losing streaks when Tampa took them down. With seven consecutive losses, the Lions have the longest active losing streak in the league.

The Texans are 9-5 and in first place in the AFC South. With the Titans close behind, they need this game much more than the Bucs. On top of that, the Bucs are riddled with injuries. Mike Evans and Chris Godwin are out, leaving Breshad Perriman as Jameis Winston’s top target. Bettors understandably jumped on Houston when it was a pick ’em.

BALTIMORE RAVENS (-10) @ CLEVELAND BROWNS
OPENING: BALTIMORE RAVENS (-7)  @ CLEVELAND BROWNS

This is slated to be Baltimore’s revenge game. The Browns were the second (and most recent) team to beat the Ravens when they somehow won in Baltimore in Week 4. When we last saw the Browns, they were struggling to move the ball against an Arizona defense that can’t stop anyone.

The caution here is related to the Saturday games. If the Patriots lose to the Bills, the Ravens lock up the top seed in the AFC. If that happens, don’t expect to see a full workload from any of the Ravens’ top players. You won’t want Baltimore -10 if Robert Griffin III is taking most of the snaps.

CINCINNATI BENGALS (+3) @ MIAMI DOLPHINS
OPENING: CINCINNATI BENGALS (PK) @ MIAMI DOLPHINS

It’s always difficult to project what happens when two bad teams meet. But bettors are siding with the Dolphins since they’re at home and have been competitive since the first month of the season.

Competing is a recent phenomenon for the Bengals, but they have looked better since Andy Dalton returned. The offensive line has improved and Joe Mixon is finally putting up the numbers we expected. Still, their version of looking competitive is “not losing by as much they used to.”

The wild card here is the weather. If the forecast holds, there will be plenty of rain and wind. It’s anyone’s guess which team will benefit the most.

NEW YORK GIANTS (PK) @ WASHINGTON REDSKINS
OPENING: NEW YORK GIANTS (+3) @ WASHINGTON REDSKINS

Here’s another meeting between two bad teams. Daniel Jones is back in the starting lineup, but it’s not like he was winning any games. Saquon Barkley did finally look like his old self last week, so perhaps bettors expect him to dominate.

Another development working in New York’s favor is the injuries to Washington’s secondary. Their best corner, Quinton Dunbar, is out, and Fabian Moreau is doubtful. The table is set for Jones to have a big comeback against a team he beat in Week 4.
