NFL Betting: Carolina Panthers Head Coaching Odds

The Carolina Panthers fired coach Ron Rivera and he’s subsequently been hired by the Washington Redskins for his next head coaching gig. Now the question is who will the Panthers hire to be their next leader on the sidelines?

BetOnline.ag has posted odds on the Carolina Panthers coaching search and the name at the top of the board is a man with plenty of head coaching experience:

MIKE MCCARTHY
ODDS: +250

It is reasonable to put McCarthy, the former coach of the Green Bay Packers and a Super Bowl champion, at the top of the list. He doesn’t have Josh McDaniels’ baggage because McDaniels didn’t properly handle a head coaching search with the Indianapolis Colts a few years ago (the one in which Frank Reich emerged as the choice for the Colts). The fact that McCarthy worked with a highly-regarded quarterback such as Aaron Rodgers will give the Panthers reason to think that McCarthy can help Cam Newton evolve into a pocket passer or lead the team in a new direction – if they decide to move on from Newton.

In general, McCarthy had a fairly good run in Green Bay. He had back-to-back losing seasons to end his stint but prior to that, had produced eight straight winning seasons, eight straight playoff seasons and a Super Bowl championship. He’s supposedly worked on his offensive strategies in the offseason, so the “new and improved” McCarthy might be a good fit for the Panthers.

JOSH MCDANIELS
ODDS: +400

If McCarthy is not the choice or if McCarthy is taken by another NFL team looking for a head coach, such as the Cleveland Browns, McDaniels would make plenty of sense. He’s a name that’s being paired with virtually every opening right now.

The one thing McDaniels might have over McCarthy, even though McCarthy has won a Super Bowl, is that McDaniels is younger and a fresher offensive mind. McCarthy was viewed as being a bit stale by the end of his tenure. McDaniels might be able to connect with Newton and Christian McCaffrey in ways McCarthy lacks and he might be able to scheme for them a bit better.

GREG ROMAN
ODDS: +600

This is another very realistic choice as Roman has worked wonders for Lamar Jackson in Baltimore. The idea that he could coach Newton well – a mobile quarterback similar to Jackson – would be reasonable. The limitation on Roman, though, is that Jackson is playing the way Cam Newton used to play: running a lot and throwing his body into the fray. Carolina needs Cam Newton to do a lot less of that since his body is breaking down. However, Roman knows how to coach offense in the NFL. He has made Jackson a very good passer, not just a runner. Roman could certainly adjust his style to fit Newton’s needs. If he makes a good impression in the interview, he would certainly be able to snag the job with the Panthers.

KEVIN STEFANSKI
ODDS: +700

This is another serious candidate who has the attention and respect of a lot of teams in the NFL. Stefanski, as offensive coordinator of the Vikings, could be the successor to Mike Zimmer in Minnesota if the Vikings get blown out by the New Orleans Saints in the NFC Wild Card Game. However, if Stefanski does not ascend to become the Vikings’ head coach, another NFL team could desire him. The Vikings offense is coming off a strong year and Stefanski is getting a lot of the credit for that. That’s what has elevated him into the head coaching conversation once again.
