WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT THE COURSE
An iconic course that has hosted top tier tournaments dating back to the 1960’s, Torrey Pines will once again offer up both its north and its south course for this tournament. A number of changes have been made to the south course in particular ahead of the 2021 U.S. Open. The greens have been relocated closer to the hazards. The undulating greens are also back to being Poa Annua and not Bentgrass. The average round score over the South Course is approximately two strokes higher than the North, so timing will be important as the top contenders look to take advantage when opportunity strikes. Course form will be an important statistic to keep an eye on this week as experience is crucial. Scrambling numbers are another area that you should consider when evaluating the best bets on the board for the Farmers Insurance Open.
A GOOD MATCHUP TO BET: RORY MCILROY OVER JON RAHM
There is no doubt that Rahm has earned all of the praise that he has received for his incredible run over the last year or so. However, we aren’t convinced that he is just going to return to Torrey Pines and perform at the high level he did when he tied for fifth at this event. Instead, we are going to fade Rahm with the player that he tied here in McIlroy, who also placed fifth in his debut here in 2019. McIlroy has four wins worldwide since his impressive run here last season. He’s also rested and focused following some time off after the DP World Tour Championship.
FIVE TRENDS WORTH NOTING FOR THE FARMERS INSURANCE OPEN
–Justin Rose is the defending champion here and has placed in the top-eight in each of his last three starts at Torrey Pines.
–The average round score on the South Course is approximately two strokes higher than the North Course.
–Scrambling numbers are important to consider given the windy, exposed location at Torrey Pines.
–At 7.765 yards, the South Course at Torrey Pines is now the longest track in history to host a PGA Tour event.
–Greens In Regulation are much more difficult at this course with golfers hitting GIR at a 3% lower clip than the average event
