2022 League of Legends LPL Summer Split Preview

A team from China has claimed the last three major international championships in League of Legends, so there will be increased attention from all regions on the LPL for the LPL Summer Split. Royal Never Give Up are the slight favorites after winning the Mid-Season Invitational in 2021 and 2022, and they are the defending champions. However, EDward Gaming are right behind them in terms of the overall odds as many expect the current world champions to bounce back after failing to make it out of the second round of the LPL Spring Split Playoffs.

We are likely to see Royal Never Give Up get off to a slow start in the Summer Split. RNG didn’t have much time off as they just won the Mid-Season Invitational a little over two weeks ago, and they are replacing top laner Bin with Breathe from Bilibili Gaming. It will take some time for Breathe to get accustomed to his teammates, and RNG will be vulnerable during that timeframe.

EDward Gaming have welcomed back jungler JunJia, and they will likely juggle their junglers just like they did last year on their way to a championship. Scout is one of the most decorated mid laners in the history of the LPL, but the carries for EDG are in the bottom lane. Viper and Meiko made EDG the best team in the world last year, and they are hoping that the meta better suits their talents.

Top laner Zoom did not work out for Top Esports, so the organization parted ways with him last month. Wayward will be their permanent top laner now, but he has to show that he can play a variety of champions. We saw him take Graves or Gwen in 15 of his 28 matches during the LPL Spring Split. If Wayward becomes an elite top laner, this could certainly be the best team in the LPL as Knight and JackeyLove are both elite carries.

One of the few top teams that didn’t do any tinkering with its roster is JD Gaming. JDG have one of the world’s best junglers in Kanavi, and they are solid at every position after bringing in 369, Hope, and Missing last December. The hope is that this team can flourish given the time they have spent together, and they could make a strong run at the title.

Victory Five wasn’t afraid to go out and spend money in the hopes of creating a superteam. V5 went 0-16 in the 2020 Spring Split and 0-16 in the 2021 Summer Split, so they acquired a whole new lineup that took the organization from worst to first with a 14-2 record in the Spring Split earlier this year. They fell apart in the postseason and finished in third place, but there’s a lot to like going forward with Karsa, Rookie, and Ppgod on the roster.
