Best Bets at 2022 THE PLAYERS Championship

The reigning champion at TPC Sawgrass is one of the favorites to win the tournament once again this year. Justin Thomas bested Lee Westwood by a single stroke at Ponte Vedra Beach in 2021 to win his first PLAYERS Championship. However, we have seen only one repeat champion at THE PLAYERS Championship since 2003 (Tiger Woods), and no golfer has ever won here in back-to-back years. That doesn’t bode well for Thomas in his bid to repeat as champion.

Event Details

Event: THE PLAYERS Championship

Category: PGA Tour

Date: March 10-13, 2022

Location: TPC at Sawgrass, Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida

Past Winners

2021: Justin Thomas -14

2020: Canceled

2019: Rory McIlroy -16

2018: Webb Simpson -18

2017: Kim Si-woo -10

The last three PLAYERS Championships were won by three of the best golfers on the PGA Tour. Thomas shot a 14-under to win in 2021, and Rory McIlroy edged out local Jim Furyk in 2019. Webb Simpson was dominant in 2018, besting three others by four strokes to cruise to his first title here while posting the best score we’ve seen at THE PLAYERS Championship since 1994.

This is an extremely popular PGA Tour event, as it is the most lucrative stand-alone tournament. A record $20 million purse will be distributed among all golfers with the winner set to receive $3.6 million.

Bryson DeChambeau will be unable to participate this week as he is still dealing with injuries, and we won’t see Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Harris English, Kevin Na, or Steve Stricker either.

The Course

TPC Sawgrass is one of the most famous golf courses in the world. The island green on the 17th hole is arguably the most recognizable hole in golf, and the final three holes are extremely tough. It will be difficult to conquer for the top golfers in the world yet again too, as the rough will be a half-inch taller and the greens are currently clocking in at 13 feet on the Stimpmeter.

Best Bet to Win THE PLAYERS Championship: Viktor Hovland +2000

It’s only a matter of time until Viktor Hovland takes his game to the next level. Hovland has won three PGA Tour events over the last three seasons, but he has yet to become a household name. The 24-year-old Norwegian has been in great form though with a T4 at The Genesis Invitational three weeks ago and a T2 at the Arnold Palmer Invitational. He missed the cut last year, but he could be ready for a resounding win this weekend.

Value Play to Win THE PLAYERS Championship: Xander Schauffele +2800

Xander Schauffele hasn’t won a PGA Tour event in three years. Schauffele has won four PGA Tour tournaments in his career, but his play has not been great recently. He has just one T10 finish since October, and that was a T3 performance at the Waste Management Phoenix Open last month. Schauffele has missed the cut in his last two trips to TPC Sawgrass, but he finished runner-up to Webb Simpson here in 2018.
