The top golfers in the world will be on a short week prior to the BMW Championship. Hurricane Henri led to the final round of The Northern Trust being delayed until Monday. That gives nearly all of the field at this week’s BMW Championship just three days to prepare for Caves Valley Golf Club. This could lead to higher scores than usual, as this is the first PGA Tour event ever on this course.
Event Details
Event: BMW Championship
Category: PGA Tour – FedEx Cup Playoffs
Date: August 26-29, 2021
Location: Caves Valley Golf Club, Owings Mills, Maryland
Past Winners
2020: Jon Rahm -4
2019: Justin Thomas -25
2018: Keegan Bradley -20
2017: Marc Leishman -23
2016: Dustin Johnson -23
Jon Rahm is the overall favorite at +650 after winning the BMW Championship at Olympia Fields in Illinois last year. Rahm beat Dustin Johnson in a playoff to win that event, and he has been in superb form over the last two months. After winning the US Open, Rahm finished T3 at The Open Championship and third at last week’s The Northern Trust.
After numerous near-misses, Tony Finau finally broke through and picked up his second PGA Tour victory last week. He had finished runner-up eight times since his first victory, but he defeated Cameron Smith in a playoff to win The Northern Trust. That has taken a lot of pressure off Finau, so he could put together another great performance after leading the field in multiple categories last week.
The Course
Caves Valley Golf Club has previously hosted the 2002 US Senior Open, the 2017 Senior Players Championship, the 2009 Women’s Golf Championship, and the 2014 International Crown. This will be the first time that a golf course in the Baltimore metro area will host a PGA Tour event though.
This course plays fast, but golfers can get themselves into trouble closer to the pin due to fast greens and numerous water hazards. Competitors won’t have to deal with the wind, but there could be issues with afternoon storms.
Best Bet to Win BMW Championship: Xander Schauffele +1800
Since winning the Summer Olympics, Xander Schauffele has struggled to find his form. Schauffele finished T46 at the WGC FedEx St. Jude Invitational the following week, and he followed that up with a T16 at The Northern Trust. He notched a T7 at the US Open and a T3 at the Masters, so we know he is capable of rising to the occasion, and he has a good chance of being in the mix this weekend.
Value Play to Win BMW Championship: Webb Simpson +4000
Webb Simpson has seven career PGA Tour victories. He claimed the Waste Management Phoenix Open and the RBC Heritage Open last year, but he has been winless for over a year. Simpson may have finished a disappointing T47 at The Northern Trust, but he was T7 at the Wyndham Championship the week before that performance and is a decent play as a longshot.
