Best Bets at the 2021 Hewlett Packard Enterprise Houston Open

There are only a few more PGA Tour events left in the 2021 calendar year. After spending the last three weeks abroad, the PGA Tour will head stateside for the Hewlett Packard Enterprise Houston Open. Sam Burns is the overall favorite to win this event, but there are a few other well-known players that will surely see a good bit of action from the public. One player in particular has very tempting odds at this price.

Event Details

Event: Hewlett Packard Enterprise Houston Open

Category: PGA Tour

Date: November 11-14, 2021

Location: Memorial Park Municipal Golf Course, Houston, Texas

Past Winners

2020: Carlos Ortiz -13

2019: Lanto Griffin -14

2018: Ian Poulter -19

2017: Russell Henley -20

2016: Jim Herman -15

Three players share the all-time tournament record at the Houston Open. This event began in 1946, and it just celebrated its Diamond Anniversary last season. However, the course record has stood for more than four decades at this point with Curtis Strange and Lee Trevino both shooting a 266 in 1980. Vijay Singh tied it in 2002, but we haven’t seen anyone shoot better than -20 since Fred Couples the following year.

Carlos Ortiz’s 13-under last year was the worst winning score at this tournament since 2010. Ortiz was going to be one of the favorites at this year’s Houston Open, but he withdrew due to a shoulder injury on Tuesday after finishing runner-up at the World Wide Technology Championship last week.

The Course

Memorial Park is a par 70 course that checks in at 7,412 yards. Rob Bolton points out that this course was extremely difficult before the cut last year, as the first-round average was 2.3 strokes over par and the second-round average was 1.3 strokes over par. It got easier over the weekend, but it still ranked as one of the hardest courses for non-major events.

Best Bet to Win the Hewlett Packard Enterprise Houston Open: Brooks Koepka +2500

Brooks Koepka missed the cut at the World Wide Technology Championship last week. He has not finished better than T38 in any of his last four events, and he doesn’t have a T10 finish since a sixth place showing at The Open Championship. However, there is value on Koepka at this price. The four-time major winner helped redesign this course a couple years ago, and he finished T5 here last year after consecutive 65s over the weekend.

Value Play to Win the Hewlett Packard Enterprise Houston Open: Talor Gooch +2800

One of the hottest golfers on the PGA Tour now is Talor Gooch. He has finished T11 in all four of the events he has entered in this new season. Gooch was in contention last week after a 63 on Saturday, but a 74 on Sunday sunk his chances of running down Viktor Hovland. In 2020, he finished in fourth place at the Houston Open thanks to a final round 63, so he is worth a shot at 28-1.
