Best Bets at the 2021 Palmetto Championship
This is typically the week where we would see the PGA Tour move north of the border for the RBC Canadian Open. Unfortunately, for the second straight year, that tournament has been cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. That’s a shame as the Canadian Open is one of the longest running tournaments in North America. It has been held most years since 1904 with the exceptions being the two World Wars and this pandemic.
Instead, 156 of the best golfers in the world will converge on Congaree Golf Club in southern South Carolina. This will be the first PGA Tour event at this course, and the plan is for this to be a one-off before the RBC Canadian Open is back on the schedule next year. Dustin Johnson and Brooks Koepka are the two favorites with Johnson at +775 and Koepka at +800.
Event: Palmetto Championship
Category: PGA Tour
Date: June 10-13, 2021
Location: Congaree Golf Club, Ridgeland, South Carolina
There are no past winners of this tournament since this is the first and likely only Palmetto Championship. Johnson and Koepka might be the favorites, but this is seen as a relatively wide-open event since many of the elite golfers are either resting or preparing in anticipation of next week’s US Open at Torrey Pines in San Diego.
If you are looking for other familiar names, Tyrell Hatton (12-1) and Matt Fitzpatrick (14-1) have the next lowest odds to win the Palmetto Championship. Sungjae Im, Tommy Fleetwood, Harris English, Ian Poulter, and Brandt Snedeker are among the players in the next tier that have sizable fanbases.
Congaree is considered one of the best new golf courses in America. It was named the best golf course that opened during the 2010s by Golf Digest, as the legendary Tom Fazio was responsible for its design. There is a lot of length considering this is a par 71 course, as Congaree measures out at nearly 7,700 yards.
The lack of rough at this golf course is one of the first things you will notice while watching, and players are very aware of the dangers that await if they miss the fairway. The bunkers are steep and deep, and the waste/collection areas aren’t easy to play.
Value Play to Win the Tournament: Sungjae Im +2000
This season hasn’t gone great for Sungjae Im. He has just three T10 finishes over the 26 tournaments he has entered, and he has failed to make the cut in four of his last six events. Im finished T2 at the Masters and T5 at the Sentry Tournament of Champions for his two best results.
What makes Im a great pick here is his driving accuracy percentage. He is successfully hitting the fairway on 69.2% of drives. That ranks 14th on the PGA Tour, and that strength will be magnified on a course like Congaree.
Top 5 Prop: Matt Fitzpatrick +300
Although Matt Fitzpatrick might appear to be a puzzling pick here, his skillset is excellent for taming Congaree. Fitzpatrick is a solid putter, ranking in the top 20 on the PGA Tour. Additionally, he ranks just behind Im in terms of driving accuracy. That has led to a lot of sharp movement on Fitzpatrick over the week.
