Best Bets at the 2021 Rocket Mortgage Classic

Everyone is gunning for Bryson DeChambeau at the 2021 Rocket Mortgage Classic. DeChambeau is a considerable favorite coming into this year’s tournament after dominating the field on his way to winning this event in 2020. He didn’t shoot a round over 67 the entire week last year, and he won the Rocket Mortgage Classic by three strokes. Matthew Wolff and Kevin Kisner were the only two golfers within six strokes of DeChambeau.

Event Details

Event: Rocket Mortgage Classic

Category: PGA Tour

Date: July 1-4, 2021

Location: Detroit Golf Club, Detroit, Michigan

Past Winners

2020: Bryson DeChambeau -23

2019: Nate Lashley -25

There is only one other golfer with odds of less than 20-1 to win this event. Patrick Reed is 16-1 to win the Rocket Mortgage Classic. Other names like Jason Kokrak, Webb Simpson, and Hideki Matsuyama are at least 20-1, showing the respect the oddsmakers have for DeChambeau on this course.

This will be the third iteration of the Rocket Mortgage Classic. Dechambeau was overpowering last year, outhitting the field by at least 10 yards with his driver. However, Nate Lashley has the current course record and won by six strokes in 2019. Lashley shot a 25-under and finished six strokes ahead of Doc Redman. Lashley had a six-stroke lead going into the final day and no one seriously challenged him on Sunday.

The Course

Detroit Golf Club doesn’t have a lot of intricacies. It’s a pretty straightforward par-72 course with four par-fives and four par-threes. The course checks in at less than 7,400 yards, and that leads to plenty of red on the leaderboard. There was never a PGA Tour tournament in Detroit before the creation of this event in 2019, and there is expected to be a sizable turnout after spectators weren’t allowed here last year.

Value Play to Win the Tournament: Patrick Reed +1600

The winner of the Farmers Insurance Open five months ago has a great chance to win his second event of the season this week. Patrick Reed earned a T5 finish here in 2019, and he has finished T10 in four events since his win at the end of January. Reed isn’t the best player off the tee, but he can scramble well and is pretty accurate in comparison to most of the other golfers taking part in this tournament.

Top 5 Prop: Bubba Watson +900

It’s been three years since Bubba Watson last won a PGA Tour event. Watson has been oh-so-close this year though. He had a T7 finish at the CJ Cup, a T4 finish at the Zozo Championship, a T5 at the QBE Shootout, and a T8 at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans. The veteran was tied for the lead after three rounds at last week’s Travelers Championship before posting a 73 on Sunday to finish T19. Watson failed to make the cut in his two previous appearances here, but he could be ready to make a big step forward.
