Best Bets at the 2021 Tour Championship

Only 30 golfers will be a part of the final event of the 2020-21 PGA Tour season. The Tour Championship will decide the FedEx Cup champion, and the winner of this tournament will win a cool $15 million for his trouble. Jon Rahm is the favorite to have the best performance in Atlanta this Labor Day Weekend, but he might not be able to take home the grand prize.

That’s because the Tour Championship works a little differently as the final event of the season. Starting strokes come into play for the FedEx Cup Championship, and while Jon Rahm will start at -6, Bryson DeChambeau will start at -7, Tony Finau will start at -8, and Patrick Cantlay will start 10 shots under par.

Rory McIlroy has won two of the last five Tour Championships. He bested Kevin Chappell and Ryan Moore in a playoff in 2016, and he beat Xander Schauffele by four strokes two years ago in the first event with starting strokes. That has led to McIlroy being installed as the second favorite this weekend behind Jon Rahm.

We saw Xander Schauffele finish with the lowest 72-hole score at the 2020 Tour Championship, but Dustin Johnson ended up being the FedEx Cup Champion after entering the weekend with as the leader.

The Course

East Lake Golf Club has hosted the Tour Championship since 2004. This was the home course of the legendary Bobby Jones, and it hasn’t seen many changes over the years. It is a par-70 that is rather stingy with scores of nine-under or less winning the event several times before the adoption of the starting strokes caveat.

The greens aren’t too difficult at East Lake, but the issue is getting it to the green. These fairways are tricky and the rough and hazards aren’t forgiving.

Best Bet to Win the Tour Championship: Brooks Koepka +2000

Four-time major winner Brooks Koepka led the field at the Tour Championship after 54 holes two years ago. Koepka ended up blowing that lead, but he continues to be at his best in the most meaningful tournaments. He finished T2 at the WGC Workday Championship and PGA Championship, and he finished T4 at the US Open and T6 at the British Open. Although Koepka hasn’t finished T20 in his last three events, the Florida State alum is an excellent value here.

Value Play to Win the Tour Championship: Abraham Ancer +2800

It’s been a great year for Abraham Ancer. He won his first PGA Tour event when he claimed the WGC FedEx St. Jude Invitational last month, and he has been in good form all year. Ancer finished T8 at the PGA Championship and T9 at the BMW Championship, giving him confidence ahead of this event. In 2020, Ancer finished T18 here, but he shot a blistering 64 on Thursday.
