Best Bets at the 2021 Valero Texas Open

Most of the best golfers in the world will not participate in this year’s Valero Texas Open. This event has the misfortune of being held the week before the Masters, so the favorites to win in Augusta are taking the week off in order to prepare for that daunting course.

It’s all systems go for a handful of stars though. Jordan Spieth, Scottie Scheffler, Tony Finau, and Hideki Matsuyama will all be in San Antonio for this tournament. Unsurprisingly, those four golfers are the favorites and the only other golfer with odds of less than 20-1 to win the Valero Texas Open is Abraham Ancer.

Event Details

Event: Valero Texas Open

Category: PGA Tour

Date: April 1-4, 2021

Location: TPC San Antonio, San Antonio, Texas

Past Winners

2020: Cancelled

2019: Corey Conners -20

2018: Andrew Landry -17

2017: Kevin Chappell -12

2016: Charley Hoffman -12

Tommy Armour III was sensational here in 2003 with a 254 over four days. He shot -26 over the course of the event, and Conners was the first golfer to shoot -20 since Armour did it when he won the last Valero Texas Open in 2019.

We have had a first-time winner for each of the last ten editions of this tournament. The most recent repeat winner was Zach Johnson in 2009 when he won this event in back-to-back years.

The Course

TPC San Antonio hosts the Canyons Course and the Oaks Course. The Canyons Course used to be part of the Senior Tour circuit until 2015, but the Oaks Course has been home to the Valero Texas Open since 2010.

The Oaks Course is daunting for inaccurate hitters. There is constant wind due to its location, and the fairways are surprisingly narrow given the elements. It’s a par 72 that runs just shy of 7,500 yards, so it has some length too. Those narrow fairways don’t give up a lot of birdies, and that includes the par fives.

Value Play to Win the Tournament: Scottie Scheffler +1400

Scheffler has looked strong over the last two months. While he missed the cut at The Players Championship in Ponte Vedra Beach, he finished T7 at the Waste Management Phoenix Open, T5 at the WGC Workday Championship, and runner-up at the WGC Match Play last week. The 24-year-old is looking for his first career victory on the PGA Tour, and he finished 20th in his one previous appearance here.

Top 5 Prop: Charley Hoffman +750

This is incredible value on Hoffman. Hoffman has dominated this course, winning the 2016 Valero Texas Open and finishing runner-up here twice. The veteran golfer is in good form with a T10 finish at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and a T17 at The Players Championship. He had rough outings in 2017 and 2018, but his other eight appearances were great. In addition to his win and two runner-up finishes, Hoffman has a third-place finish, two T11s, and two T13s.
