Best Bets at the 2021 WGC – Workday Championship

The first WGC event of the year will be in Florida once again due to COVID. From 2007 to 2016, the first WGC of the calendar year was held at Doral Golf Resort. It was moved to Chapultepec outside of Mexico City in 2017, but it has temporarily returned to the Sunshine State in 2021. It will take place at The Concession Golf Club in Bradenton, Florida, at a course designed by Jack Nicklaus and Tony Jacklin. Dustin Johnson and Jon Rahm are the two favorites, but all the best players on the PGA Tour will be gunning for the title.

Event Details

Event: WGC – Workday Championship

Category: PGA Tour

Date: February 25-28, 2021

Location: The Concession Golf Club, Bradenton, Florida

Past Winners

2020: Patrick Reed -18

2019: Dustin Johnson -21

2018: Phil Mickelson -16

2017: Dustin Johnson -14

2016: Adam Scott -12

If recent history is an indicator, Johnson will win this event simply because it is taking place in an odd-numbered year. He has won this tournament three times in his career, claiming the 2015 title in Doral, and the 2017 and 2019 championships in Chapultepec. Johnson beat Rory McIlroy by five strokes for his 2019 victory, and he is currently the top player on the PGA Tour. He won the November Masters with an absurd score of 20-under.

As for Rahm, he hasn’t won an event since the 2020 BMW Championship. However, he has come awfully close to claiming another title in the last few months. He has finished T7 in five of his last six tournaments with a T2 at the Zozo Championship, a T7 at the Masters, and a T7 at last week’s Genesis Invitational. Rahm is one of the few golfers in the field that has experience here too, finishing T22 at the 2015 NCAA Men’s Championships.

The Course

The 2021 WGC – Workday Championship will be the first PGA Tour event played on this course. The Concession’s greens draw comparisons to Augusta National, and the course distance is over 7,600 yards. This course had a rating of 77.6 before its recent renovation, and the dozens of bunkers will make things difficult for inaccurate hitters.

Value Play to Win the Tournament: Bryson DeChambeau +1800

DeChambeau won the 2015 NCAA Championships at this course, edging out Pan Cheng-tsung by a single stroke. He hasn’t been as dominant in recent months as he was in early 2020, but DeChambeau won the 2020 US Open and earned a T7 at the Sentry Tournament of Champions last month. His inability to make it to the weekend for last week’s Genesis Invitational is a blessing in disguise too, as it has led to a little more value on the big hitter. DeChambeau’s prior experience and power make him a real contender.

Top 5 Prop: Brooks Koepka +600

Koepka has been hot and cold over the last year with a T5 at the Vivint Houston Open, a T7 at the Masters, and a win at the Waste Management Phoenix Open, but he failed to finish T25 in his other five events this season. His reputation as a player that rises to the occasion for the biggest events coupled with him playing in the Sunshine State makes him a real threat to contend this weekend though.
